in a mess

Hi everyone,

I'm 21 and I've known since this week that I'm pregnant. It wasn't planned. I'm really struggling with the decision I have to make. I don't live with my parents anymore and can't move back home. I'm doing well getting my life in order and things have been going much better for me since I moved out. I live in a supported housing unit, which is only a temporary solution. My head tells me I should have an abortion, but it's so hard. I have no home and no permanent contract. I've been with my current boyfriend for 3 years. I'm really torn and I'm curious to hear your experiences and how you handled it.

    First of all, congratulations!

Secondly, taking it out isn't really an option anymore. You're pregnant, so there's no longer a choice to "take it out," but only to "keep it."

I completely understand that you're confused. Especially because you're doing so well right now getting your life on track! You can turn this to your advantage too. You already have support, and they can help you further now as well. You're not alone in this regard. Why does your boyfriend think you should get rid of it?

Personally, I wouldn't be able to get rid of it for the reasons you've given. Sit down with your boyfriend and your counselor. Discuss the possibilities. Whether to keep and raise the baby, or to have an abortion, and think about adoption. Don't make a hasty decision and don't let anyone force you. Not your boyfriend, not your counselors, friends, or family.

Wishing you lots of strength with this difficult, big task.

I'll share a bit about myself; maybe it will reassure you a bit. I was 19, with two kids, 19 months and 5 weeks old. I suddenly had to throw everything away myself. My then-partner was gone. My life wasn't great to begin with, and then it wasn't at all. I did have a house, not enough income, and no support. I started seeking help for myself, for parenting, and for finances. After 3 years, I could look back proudly at myself, my family, and who I had become. What I had achieved and what I had overcome. Honestly, they were the best years of my life up to now. It seemed like the end of the world, a mountain that couldn't be climbed.

Now, over 9 years later, I'm married to a super sweet man. My kids have grown up. I still struggle with life. Something that would always stay in my case. Last year, I had 3 miscarriages, which brought a lot of sadness. Now, fortunately, I'm 35 weeks pregnant with our third child. I'm so, so happy with the choices I made back then. Even though it didn't seem like a choice then, and it was mostly about survival.

Girl, no one can tell you what you should do. You have to follow your heart. Make it talk about what you're thinking, what you're doubting, what you feel. If necessary, do it here.
