22 and big baby wish (as the first of your friends)

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, so I'm not sure if there's already a topic I should have joined.
But I'm 22, been with my boyfriend for over 5 years, and we've been living together for a while now.
I also have a huge desire for kids. It's really getting on my nerves. My boyfriend wants to wait a bit longer, but we'd actually like to start trying within the next year. Super exciting, of course!
Unfortunately, no one in my friend group or family is ready for kids yet. They think my desire for children is totally unrealistic, and I mostly just get comments like: "just wait a bit longer, you're still so young."

Is this relatable to some of you? Are you also the only one with a desire for kids, or maybe the first to have a baby? How do you experience this?
I'd really like to talk to people in the same situation.

Don't let those reactions get to you! I'm 25 now and we're starting our first baby in 3 months, but if it had been up to me, I would have started already when I was 21 Unfortunately, I had to wait until my man was ready.
In the meantime, a friend of ours just gave birth, so we won't be the first, but at least the second
Everyone here knows about our desire for kids, but so far no one has given any negative reactions...
Do they just think you're too young, or do they have other objections? With a steady income and a place to live, I don't think they can bring up any relevant arguments, can they?

I was just 23 when my oldest was born and just 26 when my youngest was born. I'm the first and only one in my now-old friend group. I never really thought about what they'd think of it. My mom also said "wait a bit" at first, but more in the sense of "it's a lot of work, kids, haha," but you only know that when you're a mom yourself. So now I understand why she said that, but she was super happy when I took the positive test with her. And what I mean by my now-old friend group is that our interests have actually changed. And not in a bad way. My then-best friend, for example, is still the same as when we were 15, and she now lives on her own, but I have a family and a different life. We see each other a few times a year and it's like old times, but I head home early to put my kids to bed, etc. You should do what makes you happy and not worry too much about others. It'll all work out!

Here too, 22, and expecting my 2nd and 3rd child. It's lovely to be such a young mom. It's true that your life now revolves around your kid(s), but isn't that a beautiful purpose in life? Seeing my son grow up and helping him along the way, being the most important person in his life, is really special. I have a friend who also has kids, which I think helps a lot.

Well said, honey, I totally agree! I also gave birth at 22, it was a conscious choice, and yeah, you do get those reactions, but you just let them in one ear and out the other. I think if you have the basics sorted—housing, stability, a job or income, a relationship—and you really want a baby, then it's completely your choice. And indeed, as mamaN said here, you're living a totally different life, so there's a good chance you'll either lose some friends or not be on the same wavelength anymore. But believe me, it would be worth it tenfold!

I wouldn't let it bother me at all! If you feel ready yourself, then what others think doesn't matter. And as for people constantly repeating how terrible your life will become, how you won't be able to do so many things anymore... I personally find that the most annoying, but oh well... Once you get a positive test, you're the happiest person on earth, haha! I'd just go for it! If my husband had wanted it earlier, I'd have been a mom at 20, but he wanted to take it easy for a bit. Now we're expecting our first child at 25!

What such sweet responses! And congratulations on your pregnancies and/or babies!
I certainly won't let other people's opinions hold me back, but I was wondering how it feels when you can't really talk to anyone about your kids and pregnancy. Sometimes it seems a bit lonely to me, even though you get lots of love and happiness back for it!

Good to hear that it doesn't hold you back! But indeed, sometimes it can feel a bit lonely. I have lots of nice conversations and support on this forum, and that helps a lot! Meanwhile, I've been in touch with an old friend; we see each other every week. She also had a baby and they just started baby swimming or just chatting. Besides, there are also foundations or groups for young mothers to meet up, so you can still look into that! Love,

Totally agree, don't bother! I once got told "you're still waiting a bit with kids, right?" while I had just finished our first failed fertility treatment. I was only 21. Super painful! Now I'm 25 and going for a 3rd

By now, all my friends of the same age have one or more kids!

Through this forum, I've met several lovely girls I still chat with daily, so keep chatting here! If you really feel lonely in your surroundings, I'd suggest keeping someone (your mom, sister-in-law, or best friend) well informed so you at least have someone to talk to, even if they're not in the same boat.

Oh, that's indeed a pretty hurtful comment, Crumb! Exciting that you're on your third.
We're also often asked if we're going to wait a bit longer. We have a new house and I already know exactly which room would be the kids' room. That stings a bit, because I really don't want to wait super long anymore.
And Anoniem22, thanks for the tip! I'll start looking around by then to see if there are indeed clubs for young mothers near me.

Maybe a friend will unexpectedly get pregnant by then, hahaha.

I was 21 when I got pregnant with our first child. Maybe some people reacted negatively, but never to my face or to my husband. We did hear things like "she's still young," but it felt like a natural step for us.

I was with my husband when I was 15, moved in with him when I was 18, got married and bought a house when I was 20, and got pregnant with our first baby when I was 21. This year (I'm 23), we're trying for our second child.

You should just do what feels right for you. If you're both ready, and you can give your child what you want to give them, then no one else has a right to interfere, right?

Yes, your life changes. But I only experience it as a positive change! Having a child is wonderful, the most beautiful thing you can imagine!

I was 22 when I got pregnant with my son and 23 when I gave birth to him. Now I'm 25 and it's starting to gnaw at me again. We got a lot of comments like "Was he planned?" and "Did you really think it over?" Annoying, but honestly, I didn't give a damn about anyone else! Let them talk; they don't know what's going on in your head and can't think or decide for you. As for my partner, I made it very clear that my desire for kids is really high. You're never truly ready for kids because you have no idea what's coming your way (good and bad). I know it's tough when you have a huge desire for kids and your partner has less, but talking it through well is the best approach.
