Practicing with the bottle

Hi ladies,

I have a question. I've been breastfeeding my daughter for three months now. We've been practicing with the bottle for a while now in preparation for daycare. She gets really upset when we try. I stay very calm and don't force anything; I'm already happy if she just lets the teat into her mouth as practice. But she uses all her strength to make sure the teat doesn't even get near her mouth. Does anyone have tips?

I'm reading along with you. Things aren't going well for us either.

I’ve got a tip that helped us.
Our little boy also refused the bottle, but my milk supply dropped so much.. he started losing weight significantly.
Anyway, I let him get pretty hungry and then smeared the nipple with some breast milk drops. Then he’d take the nipple just because of hunger, and that did the trick.
He’s 17 now and luckily it worked out.

You could try a different bottle/brand. It worked for us. Our maternity nurse advised giving the bottle occasionally from 6 weeks onwards, rather than waiting too long, and just occasionally giving a bottle in between.

Another tip is to give freshly pumped milk. That way the taste is still the same.
It's also a good idea to have someone else give the bottle. If mom does it, they often still want the breast anyway. As a mom, you could go for a walk or something in the meantime. A baby can smell its mother from up to 6 meters away!
And use a bottle/nipple that feels like a breast. For example, Avent Natural Flow or Medela Calma.
    Good luck!
