Baby 5 weeks old sleeping in their own bedroom?

Good morning!

We are the happy parents of a 5-week-old boy. He’s doing well and is very easygoing. Unfortunately, my husband is currently burnt out. He can’t handle noise well, so everyone is walking on eggshells right now.

Our baby makes a lot of noises and babbling sounds. I’m a light sleeper but notice everything and find it pleasant, but my husband sleeps more deeply and still wakes up every now and then. He feels like he has trouble sleeping. Our bed creaks when we get in and out or turn over, so we have to be very careful, which makes our baby restless.

To give my husband some more peace, I’m thinking about putting our baby in his own room. It’s close to ours, and I have a baby monitor with a camera. But whenever I start reading about this, it doesn’t seem wise. The advice is to wait until he’s 6 months old.

Oh, it’s so difficult. I want what’s best and don’t know what to do. During the day and in the evening, he still sleeps in the stroller, but how do you all handle that? Right now, there’s a crib next to our bed. Does your baby sleep in their own room? And during the day? In the stroller?

I’d love to hear your pros and cons!

No way. Nonsense. Just in their own room. My kids have always slept in their own beds. I think it's really important that they have their own space.

    Just give it a try..
If needed, put your own mattress in the baby's room? You're with him and everyone sleeps peacefully...

Our daughter also went to her own room at 5 weeks, and we all slept so wonderfully then haha. It was also out of necessity (we had just moved and our bedroom was full of boxes because we were still missing a wardrobe). I just left our bedroom door and her bedroom door slightly ajar, and I was never really afraid of not hearing anything. But I did notice that it made quite a difference with the little noises. Once she was sick (she was older then) and had to throw up, I sat straight up in bed immediately—she did vomit... My husband, though, slept right through that last time...

I’d just try it for one night, and if it doesn’t work out, you can always put her back in your room, right?

A 5-week-old baby needing their own space? That sounds a bit odd to me. Babies actually need closeness. That’s also better for their development and has really been studied.

You should do what feels right for you. Doesn’t your husband also wake up when you get out of bed to go to the baby’s room? You could try it out.

But if you don’t feel comfortable with it, I’d still keep the baby sleeping in your room. My oldest slept with us until 5 months, the middle one until 7 months, and the youngest, who’s 8 months old, still sleeps with us. Plus, I’m still breastfeeding, which makes it more convenient.

During the day, I do let them sleep in their own room from 4 months onward. Before that, they slept in a stroller, bassinet, or crib.

    Good luck with your decision.

Tough situation. What do you feel about it?

Even when the baby is in his own room, there's still noise and you still have to get out of bed.

It's really annoying that your husband is stressed, especially with a newborn. I'd go with my gut feeling and the baby's needs. And look for a solution for your husband. A rollaway bed, a mattress in the baby's room, etc.

Thank you all so much for the replies. As usual, there were pros and cons here too. We just put him in his own crib in his own room. He looked around nicely and fell asleep quickly. We have the camera on him and find this quite nice for now. We're just trying it out, and if it doesn't work, the crib will stay next to our bed anyway.

It helps that our bedroom is just 1 meter away, and now he's lying 4 meters from us, moving from the crib to the bed. We keep his door and our door open, so we can see how it's going.

    Thanks for your responses!!

    How did you sleep?

We put our little boy in his crib at 8 PM, awake, and he fell asleep pretty quickly. He suddenly slept for 6.5 hours straight, which startled me a bit, so I woke him up for a feed. He struggled to take it and fell asleep again. I put him back down and he fell asleep pretty fast again. I myself slept restlessly, constantly checking the camera with the sound turned up to max haha. But this too needs time. I left the bedroom doors open so I could partially see his crib from there. I think this will bring more peace in the long run. Important for my husband, who’s really struggling with it.

That's good to hear, Anne! Hopefully, this will bring some much-needed rest for you both soon!
