pregnancy cholestasis

My girlfriend is almost 32 weeks pregnant now. She’s got some itching (not too extreme), but sometimes on the inside of her hands and soles of her feet. But also in other places, just not so bad that she scratches herself raw or can’t sleep because of it.

Regarding that condition (too much bile acid, if I understood correctly), they took blood yesterday for a check-up. This topic wasn’t explained in much detail at the hospital or by the midwife yet, since it might not be the case at all, but Googling doesn’t make it easier—ranging from “nothing to worry about” to the worst stories.

Have you all experienced this?

No experience with it, but it's good that you got the shot. Usually, it's a reduced liver function. The liver can't break down all the waste products, so they come out through the skin, causing itching. Paying attention to diet and drinking enough might help reduce it a bit.

    Hi,
I'm in the same boat right now. I'm almost 35 weeks pregnant. The itching is pretty extreme for me, especially at night. It's driving me crazy. I've tried everything to relieve the itching, but nothing helps. Last Tuesday, they took my blood to check my liver values and bile acid salts. My liver values were indeed not good. The other results are still pending. I already had some medication beforehand, Ursocol. It does seem to help a bit. At least I can sleep fairly well at night without having to get up 4 times to put my feet in cold water. I hope the itching doesn't get worse for your friend, because it's absolutely TERRIBLE!!
I'm going back to the gynecologist on Monday, so I hope the results will be in by then.
Also, it's important to keep a close eye on whether the baby is still moving well. If not, or if you're unsure, you should contact someone immediately so they can do a CTG!
Good luck with the final stretch and the itching!
