Hard for a man to have sex more often around ovulation.

Hi,

We've been trying for 9 months to conceive our first baby. We're starting to get a bit worried, though we still believe it could happen anytime. I just had a question for you all, and I'm curious if anyone else relates to this situation.

I can clearly feel my discharge during my fertile window. Usually, I have egg-white-like discharge for a whole week, which ends with my ovulation.

In the first few months, we tried to have lots of sex during that week. Usually every other day (so one day on, one day off), but sometimes daily. After a while, we noticed it was quite hard for my husband to keep this up. Towards the end of the week, he finds it harder to finish, it takes longer, and he enjoys it less. That's a shame because I'm most fertile at the end of that week, and I've read many times that you have a better chance of getting pregnant if sex is pleasant and you're very aroused. We discussed this after a few months and decided to change our approach.

I started using ovulation tests. I find a clear peak every month. We no longer push ourselves extra hard during the entire fertile week; in the first part of that week, we just have sex as usual, when we feel like it (usually one day on, then 2-3 days off). When the ovulation test shows the peak, we always make sure to have sex that day. Having sex less often has had a very positive effect on how easy/pleasant it goes. Of course, we also hoped this adjustment would lead to a pregnancy, but so far, it hasn't worked out.

So my question is really whether any of you relate to this. Are there others for whom it's harder to have lots of sex during the fertile window? How do you handle this? And if you do relate, did you have to try for a long time to get pregnant?

    Hi Claire,

I totally relate to this and I think you're handling it well. Use ovulation tests (if it doesn't cause too much stress) and have more targeted sex on the day of your positive test (and possibly the day after). Regular sex during your fertile days is a good strategy if you don't know exactly when your ovulation is. If you do know (based on the test), you can be a bit more targeted, so to speak

I also recognize your overall feeling: it's not always just fun for men to have sex very often. With us, it's also the case that he has a bit more trouble reaching climax if we've had a lot of sex in the days before. That seems perfectly normal to me. That's why I think it's smart to sometimes take a step back. Also keep in mind that for sperm quality, it might actually be better to have sex every other day rather than every day. Getting pregnant is more about having sex at the right time than having a whole lot of sex.

    Good luck with it!
