reflux??

Hi fellow moms,

To get straight to the point: my little guy, who is 14 weeks old, seems to be suffering from reflux. This is our first baby! After reading a lot, I know this is 'normal' unless he loses weight or refuses the bottle. Fortunately, that's not the case. However, his food comes back up, sometimes even two hours after the bottle. Mostly stomach acid then. He suffers from this. He gets restless and makes difficult faces. This also hinders his playing because he is more busy trying to hold back his stomach acid and swallow it back down. He is physically restless then. He moves/fidgets a lot. When it finally goes down, he can sleep OR is already ready for a new bottle.

We were allowed to start with carob gum from the cb. They said that either the babies get used to it or get diarrhea. The first days went great. He was more relaxed. After that, his stool became thinner but not real diarrhea. Then, as the week went by, he became restless again. He can scream after the bottle. I think of intestinal cramps? He pulls his legs all the way up or stretches himself out and has a hollow back in my arms and is extremely stiff. After walking with him for a while, it gets better for a moment before starting again. He also strains a lot (I think) to pass gas. These also seem to hurt a lot because he screams then.

We stopped using the carob gum for two feedings. The cramps seemed less but the reflux and restlessness returned.

Does anyone recognize the above? Do you have tips or advice? It seems like choosing between two evils now. I should also mention that he didn't have any reflux at the beginning. Should I worry (which I do) or is it all part of it?

I hope someone can and wants to advise me.

Love, an insecure mom

I forgot to mention that he does have a bowel movement every day!

My son also had really bad reflux. He's 11 months now and thankfully it's over! He was also extremely restless, and sleeping was out of the question unless he was in your arms or in the Maxi-Cosi. JBPM worked well for us; he still had days where it was extreme, but overall it went fine since then and without pain. They always advise starting with JBPM, but it sounds like it's not enough for you. How long have you been giving it and how many scoops per bottle? You could also ask your GP for medication, like acid reducers, or make an appointment with an osteopath.

You could try raising the head of the bed a bit so your little one doesn't lie completely flat on their back, and definitely keep them upright for a while after each feed. Good luck!

    Hang in there Kirsten,

Thanks for your reply! That's really tough that your little boy had such a hard time with it. And it's great that he's over it now.

We just started with formula that the Jbpm has already tolerated. Now we'll wait and see if this makes a difference. Hopefully, his buddy can handle it too. It feels a bit weird to switch formula now, but yeah, I can't just keep watching this either. One plus point is that it mixes well. No lumps or thick layers left behind in the bottle or milk. Maybe that helps too..

He just spat it out again. Is that okay? Or is it supposed to stop completely, as far as you know?

    Greetings!

Yes, definitely nice. From the moment we started with baby food and more solid food, the reflux became less and less. And he's been eating with the pot for a while now and bottles stay in it

That some comes back is actually normal, but it shouldn't become extreme again.

That's great, Kirsten. I totally get that you're hesitating about switching. My daughter also tried her best with another brand, but she really didn't want it anymore. Luckily, it worked out later with solid food. If you're unsure, just call the health center; they'll know what to do. Good luck while you wait and see how things develop.
