Worried about development

Hi everyone,

I’m the proud mom of a very sweet little boy who just turned 1. Our boy is doing great with fine motor skills and babbling all day long, but lately I’ve started worrying about his gross motor skills.

He’s been able to sit upright on his own pretty well since he was 8.5 months old when I place him like that, but he still can’t get himself from lying on his back or tummy into a sitting position. Also, he’s never crawled in the “normal” way. He absolutely doesn’t like being on his tummy and turns back onto his back as quickly as possible, showing no signs of wanting to crawl at all. He prefers to move around while sitting, scooting on his bottom, but that’s not very fast either. He also gets distracted easily: when I try to encourage him by placing a toy just out of reach, he doesn’t make any effort to grab it but instead just focuses on something else, like his own feet :-). Sometimes he pulls himself up when he’s in his high chair. He loves standing up, but it’s not very stable yet.
I hear from all sides that it’s really important for babies to crawl, and according to the statistics, our boy should have figured that out by now. I’ve searched the internet endlessly about this and already asked at the daycare and the pediatrician, but opinions vary. The pediatrician, for example, wasn’t worried, while at daycare they think he’s quite “slow.”
So my question is: Are there any moms here whose babies never crawled or learned to crawl very late? If so, when did they eventually start walking? And did you go to a physiotherapist for this? I’m considering that.
Thanks in advance for your replies!

Don't stress right away: not all babies crawl.
My daughter never crawled and is now a cheerful two-year-old who walks around smoothly. So she went from nothing to walking, and it took a bit longer because she was scared. She could walk holding onto one hand at a year old. Only fully independent at sixteen months because she just couldn't bring herself to let go. By the way, she can now also crawl normally. I think she just never saw the point of it. No physio or anything was needed. She wasn't the fastest with rolling either, but she was indeed fast with language.

My neighbor (an older lady) has five kids, and not one of them ever crawled.

Keep a close eye on things and keep informing yourself, but it certainly doesn't have to be a problem. On the contrary: I really know quite a few who don't want to crawl. I think physio is still too early now. I think you might consider it when he's more than a year old and still not walking. I think wanting to pull himself upright is a good sign though.

My daughter didn't even shift her poop. Really, absolutely nothing. Until 16 months we got help and then visited Paleis 't Loo and the lady found nothing wrong with it. It was so bad that she suddenly just left. I was completely in shock. Just her mother! :-)

    So relatable!!

With our daughter it's exactly the same; she only started rolling over occasionally after 10 months and still hardly does it now (she just turned 1). She simply doesn't like lying on her tummy and avoids it as much as possible. She still can't sit up without help from a lying position.

It looks like she's starting to crawl now, and walking with one hand is going reasonably well and she finds it very interesting.

When you see 'faster' developing kids around you, it can sometimes be really hard to see that your child can't do something yet that they can, but every child develops at their own pace and prioritizes what they find important themselves.

I wouldn't worry too much about it at all!
    Everything will be fine!
