Investigations after multiple miscarriages
16 replies
We had miscarriages in December (at 12 weeks) and in July (at 9 weeks). With both, we found out two weeks early. The first time, I had a D&C. The second time, I took medication.
At the end of August, we had an informational consultation about tests to find the causes of the miscarriages. Does anyone have experience with this? What tests are possible and which are common? I’ve heard that they rarely find anything because miscarriages are usually just bad luck.
I’d love to hear your experiences!
Best, Wens

Hi Wens,
I don't have any experience with tests after miscarriages, but I want to wish you all the strength and success for the coming time. -

Hi, I’ve also had 3 miscarriages. One at 10 weeks, then 12 weeks, and then 11 weeks. All back-to-back within almost 2 years!
I do have a 5-year-old son with whom I had no problems though!
After the third miscarriage, they thoroughly examined me physically, found nothing,
DNA and chromosome tests for me and my husband, also to see if our genetics clashed, but everything was perfect!
The only thing that stood out for me was an elevated thyroid level, which could indeed contribute to miscarriage.
I now take Med daily and am already 18 weeks pregnant with lots of anxiety!
As you understand, we’ve had a tough and uncertain past!
I now also completely avoid tea, cola, and light products, which I drank during the miscarriages and not during my son’s pregnancy!
It might not matter much, but it does for me! Somewhere I feel like a failed woman and guilty! The doctor tries to talk me out of it, but still, you look for everything...
I really hope everything turns out fine and that they can somehow find an explanation, because that uncertainty was killing me! But as you see and many women will confirm, don’t lose hope, I’m pregnant again after 3 miscarriages...

Hi Anne Greet,
Thanks for your reply!
I also felt guilty, like I had done something wrong. You always seem to find something to feel guilty about afterwards.
Personally, I feel like everything is fine. But then again: if there is something wrong, I want to know.
By the way, we didn't see a beating heart with either of them. By then, it had already stopped. Apparently, that makes a difference. So did you have a physical exam, DNA test, chromosomes, and thyroid check? -

Hey yeah, we did everything we could to find out something, but luckily nothing serious came out, just that thyroid issue, and they don't even know where that problem suddenly comes from. After this pregnancy, they're going to look into it further.
The OB-GYN also told me it could be a purely natural selection process, but so many in a row, and especially when you keep seeing a good little heart and a healthy baby... oh yes, my girl, my common sense also says it's better to wait those weeks than later... but damn it, it's really hard!
Don't lose hope, and in your case, probably nothing will come out either, but then you'll know, and you'll feel more at ease on that front if you get pregnant again...
Everything will work out, it has to, take some time for yourselves, because that chromosomal test and such takes a few weeks before you get results. I live in Belgium, and in Leuven they did that blood test.
Take care of yourself, listen to your heart, and talk about it because something like this stays with you. I'll just be glad when my child is born because that fear stays, and my son also asks a lot: is this baby going to die too?
A woman is confronted with that!
So you definitely shouldn't give up hope, that kept me strong.
Keep me posted.

Hello wens
I was wondering how you're doing? Have you figured out anything about the upcoming tests yet?
Take care, greetings -

Hi hi
We had a conversation two weeks ago.
It was quite disappointing. She said it could be a chromosomal abnormality. Period. The chance was small. Period.
I tried to ask some more questions, and then she mentioned there were other things. But she didn't want to say anything more about them. She made it clear that she thought it was nonsense to offer these kinds of conversations and information.
Regarding the chromosomal testing, we're still thinking about it. My partner and I aren't really on the same page. So we're considering it.

Hi there,
What a disappointment, seriously. That conversation was awful!
So, are no further tests going to be done? They're just basing it on speculation, but you need proof for that!
If it really is a chromosomal abnormality, that needs to be determined through genetic testing of you and your husband, because I assume you'll naturally want more children...
Fortunately, nothing came out of all those tests for us, and who knows, maybe not for you either, but you do need some kind of confirmation somewhere...
Our doctor explained all of this to us, what all the possible causes could be, chance, natural selection, chromosomes, thyroid problems...
Girl, don't lose hope. Go to another doctor if necessary, or demand more thorough blood tests, etc. It's after all about your body, you're the one going through it each time, and who knows, maybe they'll find something that can help you, like in my case with the thyroid problem, or they find nothing, and then you'll be more at ease for a next pregnancy if you know everything is okay...
Because that uncertainty is unbearable. As a mother, you want to know what went wrong...
Now I also say, if my doctor had found that problem earlier, he would have saved me a lot of pain. Honestly, he only did those extra tests after my 3rd miscarriage. For my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies, I had to have extra ultrasounds, but they were always normal until the 3rd miscarriage happened. Now he felt it was time for testing, and really, it was only after I insisted, because I had already asked for it after the 2nd miscarriage...
Now I'm 23 weeks pregnant, but that uncertainty remains despite feeling our baby now. I panic if I don't feel it for a moment, it's just like that, hehe.
But my doctor lets me come for lots of extra ultrasounds because those miscarriages really broke me mentally, and he knows that!
Don't let anyone put you down, girl, go for it! Stay strong and follow your gut, but keep talking to your partner about it!
This has all been good for our relationship, we're much closer to each other than before, you know!
Keep me posted, okay?
Lots of love -

Hi Anne Greet,
We’ve actually decided to go ahead with the chromosomal testing, about 3.5 weeks ago. The results should take a while, so around mid-December.
My GP wants to check my thyroid now for some other vague complaints, and I’ll hear back on Monday. I’m really glad he wants to look into it, though I’m a bit nervous too.

Hi girl,
You've made the right decision regarding the chromosomal testing. That way you can rule it out already, and even if something does come up, at least you'll know, because knowing the cause was the most important thing for me. I don't know how painful the results could be... Who knows, maybe there's also a small thyroid issue like there was for me. And look now, whether it's because of those pills I'm taking, my pregnancy is going well now, phew! I really hope that 2014 brings you a little miracle too. Don't lose hope, girl, I know what kind of hell you're going through to get those results. Tiring, huh?
I'm crossing my fingers for you on Monday! Keep me posted, I'm glad to hear from you again.
Take care, xxx -

Hi Anne Greet,
No issues found with my thyroid, so that's good, I think. :-)
2014 will be our year, for you it's all about holding on tight, right! When is your due date? -
anne greet janssens #12
Heyyy
I'm so happy for you that everything's okay with that, that's already something, right, that you know!
So it could just be nature, right, but you're totally fine with that, right, meanwhile you have to go through all of this and it's pretty tough, right...
But don't lose hope, keep trying, it's easier said than done sometimes, when I look back at the past two years... pfff but look, I'll be welcoming my miracle by January 4th at the latest, but the fear remains despite everything being okay, so far...
Are you still going for it now or are you waiting for other results? Please don't give up, okay?
Take care, girl xxx
2014 is going to be a great year! -

Hi Anne Greet,
We'll definitely keep trying. Our time will come.
Maybe they'll do some more tests if we miscarry again, but we're not hoping for that. It's okay with me if things go right for once :-)
We'll see. Sometimes it's better not to be able to see into the future... :-)
Toi toi for your last little ones! -
anne greet janssens #14
You're right, girl, just keep going, you don't have control over fate, unfortunately.
I wish you all the best and hopefully I'll read the good news hihi.
Yeah, those last few steps hihi, that uncertainty still gets to me, even though I can feel the little one, I'm not at ease pfff, that's also a downside of all those miscarriages, but hey, I can't complain now. If they say your child will be stressed if the mother is stressed during pregnancy, then I'll have a heeeeellll stressed-out baby haha.
Keep me posted if there are any changes, because if I know more, I might be able to help or something...

Hi Anne Greet,
I just wanted to let you know that I'm pregnant again.
I'm now 4-5 weeks pregnant. I find it super exciting, we have an ultrasound in three weeks and until then, it's just waiting.... Terrible.
How are you doing?
Best, Wens -
anne greet janssens #16
Hi girl,
so nice to hear from you again and congrats on the good news, big congratulations, really!
I really hope this time it works out from the bottom of my heart, and I understand that you're feeling incredibly unsure right now and all sorts of emotions...
pfff, really girl, try to enjoy it and look forward to your ultrasound, it doesn't always have to go badly, right? You have to think...
Look at me for example, I went through months of fear and all sorts of things and now I proudly have a big daughter.
So I'm really crossing my fingers for you both.
Keep me posted if you want to, and if you're having a hard time, I'm here for you!
All right, here's to a good ultrasound and how are you feeling otherwise?
Also ask for extra ultrasounds if possible, this helps a lot too hihi
In advance, a big hug

Hello dear ladies,
I always said I would share my story here if God gave me the chance to become a mom on a single day.
Like you all, I have had several miscarriages, two with curettage and two that happened naturally.
After four miscarriages, you start wondering if it will ever work out? We had some tests done but nothing came up. The next step would be insemination.
We went to the fertility center, they explained everything. They said I should take low-dose aspirin during my fertile period and then also some injections (if I'm not mistaken).
Now, since I got pregnant quickly, I decided to start with low-dose aspirin during my fertile period, without knowing if I was pregnant or not (this without insemination, which would only start three months later).
And indeed, I was pregnant and for the first time I heard the heartbeat. It was incredible, but I carried the fear for a long time, especially during the first five months. Now I am (via cesarean section, she was too stubborn to turn) almost two weeks postpartum with a beautiful daughter.
I share this with you so you don't lose hope. It's really not easy, I know how much it hurts, especially when someone around you gets pregnant again or when you see a pregnant woman.
Also, if there are more problems in later stages, you can go here: http://kineplus.be/wie-zijn-wij/
They help through acupuncture to get pregnant together with artificial insemination.
I haven't done this myself but I have heard some success stories. There isn't much on the website itself but you can contact one of those people about your problem.
I wish you all lots of strength, patience, and courage, but mainly that your dream to become a mother comes true as soon as possible. I'm thinking of you!
Kind regards,
L.
