Overweight and pregnancy

Hi ladies,

I've been off the pill for about 8 months now and unfortunately haven't had a positive test yet. I know it can take a bit longer and that 8 months isn't that long (though every month that passes is one too many ), but I am starting to wonder what might be causing the delay for us.

One factor that comes up is my overweight. I'm 169 cm tall and weigh 98 kg, and I'm a typical yo-yo dieter. 2.5 years ago I was at my heaviest, weighing 125 kg, and I lost 40 kg through a crash diet. Unfortunately, I've gained 15 kg back in the last two years, but I've been fairly stable weight-wise over the past few months. So right now I have a BMI of around 35.

You read online that being overweight can affect your fertility, but I know I ovulate around day 12 every month and I get my period regularly. I know PCOS can be a result of being overweight, but I don't think I have that. Can being overweight have other causes for why getting pregnant isn't working out?

Also, I'm curious about positive stories about pregnancy and being overweight. Who else has a BMI of 30+ and has gotten pregnant? How many rounds did you go through for that?

Best, Babbel

    Hi Babbel,

I don't have overweight, but I just wanted to wish you lots of success..

One piece of advice I'd like to give: don't focus too much on it and have intercourse every 2 days, that gives you the best chance of getting pregnant!

With me it worked out at the 5th month, I suddenly stopped thinking about it, focused on something else and from then on we did it every 2 days. My gynecologist had recommended it to me

    Hi babbel,

I myself also have excess weight, I'm 1.63 m and weigh 85 kg.
I've given birth myself now, I have a son of 6.5 months.
But my tip is just like above.. every 2 days intercourse.. and enjoy it, don't make it a struggle. I was so focused on it back then, always testing, and in my mind I kept thinking that it only frustrated me more.
I let it go then and had sex every 2 days and was pregnant 2 months later.
Have fun with the chores and I sincerely hope you'll have a positive test soon

    Love, Carla

    Hi there,

I'm 1.67m tall and weigh 90kg. I stopped the pill, got my period, and then didn't get it again. So for us, it worked on the first try. Even though my husband had a 90% chance of being unable to have kids. So I don't think the extra weight has much to do with it.

Hope it works out quickly for you too!

    Love,

    Angelique

    @ Babbel,

I kind of get the feeling that genetics play a role in getting pregnant (that's just my personal thought). My mom and my sister also got pregnant very quickly.
My mom had a normal weight back then, and my sister was overweight. I'm also quite overweight (BMI > 40), and I actually have to give birth in the hospital because of my high weight.
I got pregnant within 3 months and wasn't really trying very actively. Friends of ours (with normal weight) were trying for a year and were about to see the doctor, until she got pregnant just because she wasn't even thinking about it that month.
I do read that couples on average take 9 months to get pregnant.
But I can totally understand that when you want to get pregnant, you automatically start focusing on it.
I do notice that I have to carry a lot now that I'm pregnant, so it would be handy to lose some weight. You can also request a consultation at our midwife's if you're trying to conceive. And maybe together with the GP and dietitian you could try to start at a lower weight.
I completely understand that this doesn't just happen easily. I'm fully aware that we were very lucky to get pregnant so quickly. And luckily it didn't become a must to lose weight before I could get pregnant.
If you'd have to go through the "medical mill" (IVF etc.), they often expect you to lose weight too. But then I sometimes think: "if losing weight was so easy..." then I would have succeeded myself...
Wishing you lots of strength, and I hope you'll be pregnant soon too.

    Hi babbel,

I also have a BMI of almost 35 and already have a healthy four-year-old daughter. This one happened on the second round... For me, being overweight didn't have any negative impact.

We're now trying for a second little one, and this month we're also on round two... I'm curious to see.

I wouldn't worry too much about your weight; there are so many plus-size ladies who get pregnant without any problems.

Just stay relaxed, don't try too hard to focus, and indeed, have a nice little get-together every other day, and it'll sort itself out quickly.

    Best, x

    Hi Babbel,

I don't think you should look at it so strictly as: "I'm overweight so I'll get pregnant less quickly." It's just about probability, the average. You can still have a lot of luck. I'm also overweight myself, 1.68m and 81kg. I started dieting, and I've lost 5 kilos now.

For me, there's also the following factor: you have less chance of getting pregnant but also a higher chance of miscarriage. We had a miscarriage in December, after 12 weeks of pregnancy. It was a huge blow for me, and I wanted to reduce the chance of another miscarriage. I got pregnant in the first month after my diet. I felt good about that. Unfortunately, I had a second miscarriage last week.

I've gained a bit again because I'm an emotional eater, but I'll definitely start dieting again. Partly because I think people who are healthy feel good in their own skin (emotionally and physically, regardless of weight) and get pregnant faster, partly because I think it might be easier during pregnancy, and partly because I enjoy living healthily.

I'm reading this back now and I fear I might come across a bit preachy. But what I really mean is, it's just about probability. If you feel good at your weight and eat healthily, you might have bad luck, but you could also be one of the lucky ones! I wish you lots of success! Greetings, Wens

Thanks for the replies! It’s nice to read that there are also ladies who got pregnant with a high BMI. It’s sad to read that it went wrong twice for Wens. Seems really tough to go through that, strength with processing it!
Unfortunately, it’s always hard to guess what the reason is that it sometimes takes a bit longer. Perhaps my weight plays a role here, but I can’t really imagine that it’s the ‘main cause’. But I’m trying to keep an eye on my weight and really want to lose weight again. Especially because I felt better in my own skin with 15 kilos less, which you also said is important when trying to conceive. And in the back of my mind, I’m also thinking that if we ever go down the medical route, my BMI will play a role. Whether I agree with that or not.... Unfortunately, it’s not going so well at the moment with the nice weather, ice creams, and BBQs ;-) But I’m going to pick it up again and try to make those extra kilos disappear. And hopefully, I’ll have a positive test in my hands soon :-)

I have a BMI of 40 and gave birth to a daughter this year who was 54cm and 3kg400. I took Clomid once and got pregnant right away. Now my daughter is 5 months old and a long, narrow baby who is very active.

Glad this topic is being brought up! I was actually just thinking about the same question as you, Babbel. Now that I'm reading the responses here, I feel a lot more at ease. I'm also way too heavy, and we've been trying for our first baby for 8 months already.
