Miscarriage?

Had my first ultrasound this morning. The midwife said I should be 8 weeks based on the calculations. Unfortunately, the baby measured at 6 weeks and 1 day with no heartbeat. She’s saying it’s a miscarriage. We’re going to the hospital to pick up the pills, but my gut is telling me otherwise. If I go by our community, it’s very possible I’m only 6 weeks pregnant, and I’ve read here that there’s a real chance the heartbeat might not be visible yet with an external ultrasound. Do they do another ultrasound at the hospital before giving you the pills? Maybe it’s just emotion, but I’m wondering if it really is a miscarriage. No symptoms, which is why I’m asking here for advice. How does this usually go? Should I ask for another ultrasound or trust that they got it right?

If you don't feel comfortable with it, you could always wait, right? No one is forcing you to take medication.

Oh, that's so sad, confusing, and overwhelming.
I'd just call the midwife again tomorrow. Tell your story...say you'd like to wait a bit longer... maybe you can get a sort of second opinion at the hospital...or they might do another ultrasound next week.
I'd just talk it through openly...who knows what else they can do to give you some reassurance. I know it could go either way...it's possible you feel nothing right now and it turns out to be a miscarriage...but it's also possible that with a very irregular cycle, there's quite a big difference in timing.
I wish you lots of strength...such a tough and uncertain time. Hugs

That's really sad and upsetting. I'd advise you not to ignore your feelings. Ask for another ultrasound, and this time have it done internally. If your calculations are correct, it's quite possible that a heartbeat wouldn't be visible with an external ultrasound. By the way, my doctor always did the first ultrasound internally.

My experience was that my doctor did another ultrasound a week after the first bad one. Both were internal. They could then see whether there had been any growth or not. The gynecologist at the hospital also did another ultrasound to confirm what the doctor had seen. Only after that did I get the pills. I was truly certain then that I had had a miscarriage.

Wishing you lots of strength, and I hope your own calculations are correct.

Same here. Unfortunately, no heartbeat at 7 weeks. Why would you take pills? With me, the miscarriage started after two weeks. I've heard three horror stories about those pills. Women who basically almost died from intense bleeding after taking the pills. I wouldn't take them if it's not necessary. My midwife told me that with one woman, the miscarriage didn't start until after 32 weeks. The baby hadn't grown any further, so she didn't have a huge belly or anything. I've also heard bad stories about the D&C, especially if you want to get pregnant again. I'd really wait for your body. It did me a lot of good mentally to be able to say goodbye to my baby for two weeks, whom I unfortunately couldn't hold in my arms. It's heavy, but it was good to get through this period. Especially if you're unsure, I'd just wait. I had another ultrasound to be able to accept that the heartbeat wasn't there. I went to a different midwife. I wanted to be sure no mistake was made. I don't regret that either. Stay strong, girl!

Linda, did you also have bleeding every day those two weeks, or did it only start after two weeks?
