Getting pregnant while breastfeeding

Hi everyone!

I have a 6-month-old son who still nurses at night and is pumped during the day. I'm feeling a bit down because last week I got a positive test from my GP, but it turned out to be a false positive. I was also told that I haven't had a period yet due to breastfeeding, as far as they could see from my blood tests

I'm hoping to get some positive stories here from moms who got pregnant while still breastfeeding their babies, and how long it took for your periods to return or for you to get pregnant.

Best,
Stefanie

    Hi Stefanie,

When my oldest was 6 weeks old, I started the pill. First, I tried the breastfeeding pill, but it made me feel constantly pregnant, so I switched to the regular pill. I stuck to the placebo week, so I got my period every 4 weeks. When he turned 12 months old, I stopped the pill and got pregnant right away. I even continued breastfeeding until my second child was born, so that’s when I finally stopped. Especially as they start eating more solid food (which your little one can probably do now too), you’ll be breastfeeding less frequently, so you can just become fertile again. Of course, it doesn’t work like this for everyone, but for me, it wasn’t that breastfeeding prevented me from being fertile.

    Hope this helps you out.

    Love,

Thanks for your message! He’s already having veggie puree from 4.5 months and fruit from 5 months, so he’s been eating less frequently for a while. He still asks for 2 night feeds, and I read that these can prevent your cycle from returning.
I was wondering, could the pill help bring my cycle back?

    Greetings

Hey girl, I gave birth in November last year after breastfeeding until October. I didn't have a cycle at first, and now it's finally back, but it's not like it was before my pregnancy. I think it's hard to have a normal cycle if you've been breastfeeding for a long time. I breastfed for almost a year, and in the last few months, he only nursed 2 or sometimes 3 times a day. Now we're on round 5 for baby 4. With my son, I got pregnant on the first try.

Babytje4 thank you so much, I'm glad you shared your story with me!

I've decided to continue until 9 months, but then see whether I'll taper off or not. It's a give and take, but it still feels really uncomfortable somewhere that you have to make choices. That positive test didn't help much either... I was so happy... but well. I really wanted to have my kids close together in time. Many think I'm exaggerating, but that's everyone's opinion.

My eldest also asked about night feeds. I only started weaning off those when I was 3 months pregnant with the second one. I have no idea if the pill makes you get your cycle back. It should actually prevent you from getting it. But intuitively, the pill seemed to put things back on track for me. Unfortunately, every body is different, to put it mildly

I got my period 3-4 months after giving birth, even though I didn’t have any cycles before my daughter’s pregnancy due to PCOS. I was breastfeeding full-time (including night feeds). After 3 months, I found out I was pregnant again, unfortunately it was an ectopic pregnancy and they had to remove the baby along with my fallopian tube... After that, no more cycles until I got pregnant again at the end of September! Unfortunately, another ectopic pregnancy...
