When did you go to the GP?

Hi everyone, my partner and I started trying for a baby back in April 2017. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out yet. About a year into trying, I brought up the idea of going to the GP, but my partner wasn't ready to hear that at all. A few days ago I brought it up again, but he still doesn't know if or when he wants to do that. I find it really tough. When did you all take the step to see the doctor? Are the guys in your lives also a bit hesitant about this? I'm becoming more and more unsure about our fertility.

I’d go to the GP after a year!

I finally went to the gynecologist after a year... and in the meantime, another year has passed..
My husband didn't want to know much about it at first, but sometimes you just have to put your ego aside.

I also went after a year, made an appointment, and my husband just came along with me. Half a year later, I was pregnant. Just make an appointment; he’ll probably come along if the appointment is set.

I actually went to the gynecologist pretty quickly, but that was because my period didn't kick in properly after stopping the pill. After 4 months, we were pregnant. So it really depends on the situation.

    Thanks for your responses.
I think I'll start thinking about it again tonight. He's had another week to think it over now. Hope he actually did think about it.

Seeing a doctor is already a hurdle for many men, but those post-coital sperm samples are an even bigger hurdle for many...

I had to go to the GP for a smear test. When the GP discussed the questionnaire with my mom and the question about contraception, and my answer was that I wasn't using any, the GP started asking more questions herself.
I told her that I was so scared it might be something wrong with me. She then made a referral to the gynecologist to have an internal ultrasound done, just to rule out some things. That's how things started rolling for us.

After trying for so long with no result, I’d definitely go see the gynecologist! If my husband doesn’t want to know anything about it, I’d go alone. I want to know if my body is okay, and it’s still my body, so I decide that myself . If waiting doesn’t feel right for you, I’d just go. The most important thing is to listen to yourself in this case. If treatments come up later that require sperm donation, you can always discuss that with your partner. Maybe there’s something simple wrong, and you’re wasting months for nothing.

We’re now on round 5 after the stillbirth in April, and if it doesn’t work out by January, I’ll go back to the gynecologist. Normally, I’d wait a year, but my ovarian reserve is on the short side, and I’d kick myself if it caused problems that could be fixed quickly. Then I’d be trying for months when it could’ve already worked out. Really not worth it..

Exciting little post! I'm definitely not saying you should do it without him knowing, but maybe you can discuss with him that you want to get yourself checked out so you can put those worries to rest or take action if needed. The only thing he'd need to decide is whether he wants to come along to the appointments or not. But of course, you need to want this too! I hope you two figure it out together and soon welcome a little miracle!

It's so hard to take that first step to the GP.
If I understand correctly, you've been trying for about 1.5 years now. Have you ever held a positive pregnancy test?
We've been trying for 2 years and 2 months now and have just finished our first ICSI treatment (I'm currently in the second two-week wait).
The only thing I can tell you is: we also found it really difficult when everything started. But looking back now, I'm glad we got things going in December (so after being trying for 1 year and 4 months). Now, a year later, with many ups and downs, we can finally look forward and hope for a baby in the future. The medical journey is incredibly tough, but without help, we would never have been able to have a child on our own. But we didn't know that back then, of course.

Louisag, that's right. We've been trying for about a year and a half now, and unfortunately, haven't had a positive test yet. Yeah, my boyfriend is more like, "it'll happen when it happens." I'm more inclined to take the next step.

@Snbtje I can relate to your situation. We went to the GP after more than a year. My husband didn’t want to go at first because he’d rather keep trying a bit longer. I told him I’d also like to keep trying naturally, but I needed to know if there was anything to hope for (i.e., whether a natural pregnancy was possible). Unfortunately, it turned out we can never conceive naturally. It’s now been over a year since we visited the GP, and we still haven’t had a positive test, but we’re in the ICSI process now

Anyway, I hope you’ll soon have a beautiful little miracle of your own

Unfortunately, the demons have come back today. Luckily, we finally agreed this week to go see the doctor. I called this afternoon, and we have an appointment on Monday. It’s already giving me more peace of mind. @meid22 Geez, that must have been terrible news! I hope your patience is soon rewarded with a little miracle!

Bummer.. but good that you have an appointment with the midwife. Rooting for you for good news and hopefully you'll get a positive test soon!
