Insecure about the first ultrasound..

Hi everyone,

I had my first ultrasound yesterday and unfortunately it didn't go as I had hoped. It was a bit weird and I have to go back in a week for another scan.

There was hardly anything visible on the external scan, everything was still very small. After that, the midwife did an internal scan. On that one you could see that the baby was lying against my uterine wall and you could see a very tiny beating heart. She couldn't measure the baby, so we have no idea how far along I am. Because the baby was pressed against the uterine wall, it blended in with the wall on the ultrasound and you couldn't make anything out of it. According to the midwife, there are 3 possibilities: I'm less far along than we think, the baby is really tucked away deep and there's nothing wrong, or it's a sign that something is wrong. The last one really scared me, and waiting a week causes a few stressful moments here and there. This uncertainty is truly awful; looking back, I would have preferred to have the scan later.. I'm not really sure what to make of this. I uploaded a picture of the ultrasound and my first thought when seeing it was; oh dear, this doesn't look good.. I'm curious what you all think.

To give a clear idea of how far along I might be, a short explanation:

I have a cycle of 42 days. The first day of my last period was November 1, 2016, and I ovulated on November 25. On December 6 I had a very faint line on the pregnancy test (I gave this date as the positive test day to the midwife) and on December 13 I was supposed to get my period; that day I had 2 thick lines!

Does anyone have an idea how far along I am then, and has anyone experienced this before with an ultrasound, where the baby is lying against the wall?

Love from a worried mom..

I got an ultrasound later on. The first one I had was at 9 weeks, and thankfully there was something to see, but it wasn't very clear yet. So it's very possible that you're just not that far along yet. I wouldn't know exactly how pregnant you are, because I'm really bad at math.

In my case, the baby was head-down and also pressed against the uterine wall. I had to come back two weeks later, and then they could measure everything properly.

Try not to dwell on it too much, because stress isn't good either. You can only get an answer after your next ultrasound.
