Does the second birth always go faster?

Do you always give birth faster with your second baby? My first one only took 8 hours, so I thought that was pretty fast, but well, now I know what to expect and I'm actually a bit apprehensive.

The OB-GYN gives you no useful answer again: 'Every birth is different'. As if that helps me at all...

Love, Axelle

    hi axelle

the first one was within 4 hours (the midwife had only been at our house for half an hour when the little lady didn't want to wait any longer)
the second one was within 2 hours, the midwife arrived just in time at our house. (the midwife had been there less than 5 minutes when the little boy wanted to come into the world immediately)
the third one took 6 hours (this shows you, every birth is different)
i hope the fourth one will also be within 2 hours. (i do hope the midwife arrives on time)

they were all born at home.

My first birth started spontaneously and lasted 7 hours from the first contraction until our son was on my chest. For the second one, I was induced, and it took 6 hours from the first contraction until he was on my stomach. I think if it starts spontaneously, it might indeed go a lot faster with the second baby. With induction, everything is forced, so it often takes longer.

    haha I hope so!
my first labor lasted 4.5 hours, they induced me at 7am and at 11 I could start pushing (half an hour) and Robin was born

my OB said that was impressive for a first labor and keeps telling me our second baby will come just as smoothly

so I'm holding her to that!! =p

I hope my second birth goes faster. My first one took 24 hours and ended with a C-section...

My first birth was also induced, and it lasted 17.5 hours from the first contraction until he was on my chest. My second was spontaneous and only took 8 hours. I only had to push a few times and he was there. Now I hope the third time will also be spontaneous because I’m thinking about that just like Iza, and I also hope it goes smoothly. But unfortunately, I think you’re right, gynecologist, every birth is different and you can’t really compare them.

    Kind regards

I gave birth to my son 6 weeks early, and it only took 1.5 hours from start to finish.
This was really veeeery fast, and I hope the second one takes a bit longer. When I felt my first contraction, the midwife was there within 10 minutes. I already had full dilation at that point, but I had to hold it in because we needed to go to the hospital. Once at the hospital, it was pushing and there he was!

It went so fast that you suddenly have a lot of pain out of nowhere...

With our first, I was in labor for 36 hours, and when I finally reached 10 cm dilation, it only took 30-40 minutes for him to be born :-D

So I'm hoping the second one will be faster!

With my first, it only took 30 minutes from the first contractions until he was on my chest. I'm now in week 37 of my second pregnancy and hope that if/when it happens, it'll be just as quick this time.

Ehm, it took me 14.5 hours for the first one. In the end, with a medical delivery, my son was born. The second one definitely went much faster. I'm now pregnant for the third time... hopefully it will go smoothly and more easily than the first two.

I found the contractions after my water broke the worst. That lasted about an hour and a half.

Pushing wasn't a problem for me at all. I think the actual birth of the baby's head takes much less time than the whole pushing phase. I pushed for 45 minutes. I think I pushed effectively 4 times for the head and once for the body, but it's all a bit hazy now :-)

My labor lasted 3 hours.. now for the second one, that's more than enough for me!

The first birth took 6 hours, and then our daughter was here. The second birth was 45 minutes, and our son was born without a midwife being there—it went so smoothly. After the second birth, though, I had a lot afterpains......

Wow, that was really fast! Weren't you super shocked? I don't know what would happen to me, I guess :-)

It happens to you and I just couldn't hold back. My husband "caught" our son and at that moment you're very clear-headed and can think very clearly. When he was launched, he started crying right away, then placed on my chest and a towel and hat were grabbed, and he was nicely wrapped up, and after 5 minutes the UK was there. Afterwards, the two of us had a good cry, but were just very happy and grateful that everything had gone well.

    Hi Katie,
This is also a question I’ve been wrestling with. Not weird at all.
It’s really interesting to read about these experiences in advance. Thanks, ladies!
    Hopefully, more will follow...

With my first, it took 2 hours, and the second one came in three-quarters of an hour, even though it was breech, but it went really fast. After that, I had a lot afterpains, pfffff.
Now I'm pregnant with the third one, which can also come quickly, but not in three-quarters of an hour, because then I won't make it to the hospital.

Hi! With my first two, I was induced, didn't dilate, and was 10 days late. I suffered so much. At 17:30 I had constant contractions. I'm now 32 weeks. Hopefully, this time it'll go faster because I'm starting to get a bit scared.

I was in labor from the first contractions until my daughter was born, 16 years ago. It took 21.5 hours.
I unfortunately recognize the story about the pethidine... I held back because I couldn't just give in to it.

Of course, I don't want that anymore now. I'm absolutely not afraid of the pain because you survive it and it passes.
Actually, I always wished to experience it once more and never expected it to happen again!!

I think every birth gets shorter. My first labor lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes, then each time a bit shorter and easier! It's probably because you're more relaxed and not scared anymore, since you know what's going to happen. I always used to say; I'd rather give birth than have holes in my molars filled (but that was back when I was so stubborn, that I didn't use anesthesia at the dentist ;-)) Now I don't mind it at all, I just feel bad that this time I don't have a bathroom with a bathtub... I've been able to sit in a bath for two births, until the baby came, that's truly relaxing! You feel much less of the contractions that way!
