22 years old and unexpectedly pregnant

Hi (expectant) moms,

I'm Yentl, 22, and I just found out I'm pregnant. Even though I love kids a lot and was definitely hoping to become a young mom, this isn't exactly the most pleasant surprise. I had unprotected sex with my ex-boyfriend 16 and 15 days ago (Dec 4th and 5th) – to make things even more complicated! I realized on Thursday, Dec 8th, that I'd forgotten to get the morning-after pill. So I was too late for the 3-day pill and bought the 5-day pill instead. Since I wasn't very fertile during that time (5 days after ovulation), I didn't worry too much. But today, my period is 7 days late, and two tests both came back positive. All in all, it's quite special to me that I got pregnant, and completely against my expectations, I'm now wildly doubting whether I should keep this baby. I've been browsing around this site and read, for example, that the baby's gender and eye color are already determined. That makes it feel so 'real' in some way. So my question: are there people who have experience with this struggle and can maybe help me along in making a decision? Also, I've read all sorts of things about how long I might actually be pregnant. Maybe someone who understands that better than I do? I'd love to hear from you. Love,

    First of all, congratulations!
I guess you're about 4 to 5 weeks pregnant now. The things you mention (hair color, eyes, etc.) are all genetically determined, there's nothing you can do about that. Reading your story, I think you've already made a decision for yourself, but I'd still think carefully about it. It's a life you're carrying inside you, which is truly special..

I'm only 20, and now over 30 weeks pregnant. I'll hopefully give birth just before I turn 21. I had a lot of doubts at the beginning about whether I should keep the baby, and so far, it hasn't been an easy pregnancy either. Although my situation is a bit different—I've been living with my partner for a few years—and I can get plenty of help from family if needed. I don't know how your situation is going? Are you still living with your parents, or are you independent? Do you want to involve your ex in the baby's life if you keep it (and does he want to)? Can you afford it financially? Etc. It's tough, but it's something you'll have to decide on your own. Good luck with your decision...

Probably my reply is too late now and you've already made a choice, but I just want to say that no one can give you advice on this. Only you know how things went with your ex, why you had sex with your ex, and why it turned out differently... Talk to him and you'll figure it out together. So many people would love to have a baby and can't. Please think carefully and I hope you've kept the baby.
