I used to work in obstetrics and was on call for deliveries. I was also present at the birth of a baby whose mother smoked. The baby was addicted to smoking and had real withdrawal symptoms; big eyes, trembling. The baby had to be admitted, and the mother had to talk with social services. This is an extreme case, but maybe if you look up a video of this here, you'll be so shocked that you won't even dare to smoke anymore! By the way, I've been smoke-free for just under 5 weeks now, because I want to get pregnant. -

I have asthma because my mom smoked. -

Ladies... no matter how bad it is... I smoke too, I have 3 healthy kids.. I find it hard to quit... cutting down is better due to stress because that's definitely not good for the baby. .. and whether you get tips or negative messages here.. it's and remains your choice.. Everyone definitely has an opinion about smoking and for example tattoos.. .. in such a world we unfortunately live hahaha. . -

Hey, your kids are still young.
We'll talk again in ten or fifteen years. Nothing has been said yet.
It had to be your fourth, but it's true that something is off.
I find it so arrogant that smokers defend themselves no matter what or how. They keep coming up with excuses and justifications. This is really distressing! -

Be glad it's just a short article. -

Exactly! And it doesn't necessarily mean your baby will develop health problems... I often see people defend themselves by saying "so-and-so smoked too, but their kids are healthy!" or "my parents smoked too, but I'm healthy..." What a weak excuse. Nobody's saying your child will definitely be unhealthy... But you SIGNIFICANTLY increase the risk of health problems!! And I think as a good mother, you'd want to give your child the healthiest possible start! Why take the risk? Why should your child suffer for YOUR smoking before they're even born? It's unfair to make them breathe in secondhand smoke already.. -

I think I get it now that something could go wrong, but I already said that right away haha. Thanks anyway, everyone! x -

Hey girl!
I'm now pregnant with my 4th and have smoked through all my pregnancies!
I've cut down but just couldn't stop!!
My gynecologist said at one point... you'd better not stop now either... it'll cause you too much stress and that puts your baby at even more risk!
I have healthy children.. unfortunately had 1 miscarriage but that wasn't related to smoking!
I'm not encouraging you to keep smoking...
if you manage to quit that would be top...
it has nothing to do with you as a mother though!
Don't let people like that get to you...
I'm trying to quit now too but it's just hard!
Strength and go for it! -

Okay... we don't have to act so ugly right away, do we??? They only asked for tips... and every body is different and it's hard to talk about... but you're acting like smokers are junkies.... Anyway, it's nice here... I'm going to another forum... good luck with the pregnancy everyone!!! -

Oh no, LJ, I don't call smokers junkies. A junkie is an addict who values their stuff more than anything else. And the moment you value smoking more than your child... well, if the shoe fits. I have nothing against smokers, it's your own body, your own choice... But the moment you're carrying an innocent and pure life inside you, it's no longer just your own body but also your child's. When you continue smoking, you're deciding for your child that they should also take in all those substances. That's super selfish! -

Gotta say, after 17 years of smoking, I quit because I'm pregnant. I find it harder to give up raw meat than to give up a cigarette. And I really only smoked a pack a day. -

I used to smoke too, but I quit in time so I wasn't smoking anymore when I was pregnant. You know what helps? Every time you blow out smoke (and I mean every single time), imagine you're hovering over your baby's crib and blowing the smoke right into their face. It sounds harsh, but trust me, you'll really think twice about every puff and every time you blow out smoke.
Because actually, you're kind of doing the same thing now, except your little one is still safely inside you.
Try that out. A friend of mine smoked one more day, but every time she blew out smoke, she pictured that image (of her baby in the crib and a cloud of smoke right into that little face). But you do have to keep reminding yourself of it every time.
Some people find it harder to quit. I always smoked, but I never had any trouble stopping once we started having kids.
Good luck! -

Liesseling, same here! I miss a medium steak, an Americain sandwich... Much more than a cigarette! -

I stopped right away too when I found out, I swear. And I find it weird enough that it's not even hard at all!!
But that's probably because last year I saw a little clip of an ultrasound where you could see the baby reacting to smoking. Poor thing couldn't handle it! I wasn't pregnant yet at the time, but I already knew I'd quit during pregnancy! And now that it's here, I don't even have trouble with it hihi, I'm secretly proud, I thought it would be harder, but exactly, I find my baby more important and keep seeing that ultrasound image in my mind.. And what helps a bit is the nausea, my sister was smoking on the balcony the other day and I already felt sick when that smell came inside, bah! Let's see if I can find that little clip, maybe it'll help. -

Part of the video I saw, poor kid!! You can clearly see that it's bad for him and his real photos of a mother who was smoking at the time
