How long does it take for a miscarriage to pass?

24 replies · page 1 of 2

aw
Had my second ultrasound today, I should be just 11 weeks pregnant. Unfortunately, it turned out the heartbeat stopped at 9 weeks (right after we had joyfully seen it fluttering at 8+ weeks during our first scan). So sad.

I already had a strong feeling about it after all my symptoms suddenly disappeared out of nowhere last week, and a few days later I got brown discharge. Now it's a wait-and-see situation until the miscarriage progresses.

Since it seems to have already started (the brown discharge has been going on for 3 days now - very little, actually, just a 'wipe' when wiping and occasionally some drops - and it's accompanied by a nagging pain in my lower abdomen), I've decided, in consultation with my midwife, to wait for a natural process. I find the whole thing very nerve-wracking and can't really gauge what's in store for me. How long does it usually take for the bleeding to start progressing after symptoms subside, discharge begins, and nagging abdominal pain starts?

Of course, there's no standard story and a miscarriage can play out very differently, but I'd appreciate hearing some experiences from 'fellow sufferers'. I couldn't quickly find an existing topic about this here, so hopefully, it's okay to start a new thread. It's already nice to be able to share my story for a moment. I'm curious to hear your experiences!

First of all, I want to wish you lots of strength during this time. I don't have personal experience with a miscarriage, but a friend of mine went through something very similar to what you're experiencing now. For her, it took quite a while (about 1.5 weeks) for the miscarriage to fully progress. Unfortunately, not all the tissue had passed from her uterus. She became very ill, with fever, etc., and eventually had to undergo an emergency D&C.
I certainly don't want to scare you but I just want to remind you to listen carefully to your body and contact your midwife if something doesn't feel right.
    Wishing you lots of strength.

Thanks for your reply, Iza. It's nice to hear other people's experiences. The midwife had already warned me that some women do indeed have some tissue left behind. That sounds really unpleasant for your friend! It's all quite exciting, but at least it's good to know what to expect.

Aw, first of all, I wish you lots of strength with this sad news. I also had a miscarriage myself and was around 10 weeks pregnant. My gynecologist said it could take about 2 months before it really went through. I also had brown discharge for a few days. I waited a week. Then I couldn't handle it mentally anymore and chose to take Cryotec tablets, which started the miscarriage. I found this super intense and had quite a lot of symptoms. After that, the tissue still wasn't completely gone. Eventually, after a month, I was 'clean' and the bleeding stopped. The only advice I can give you is that if you choose to get medical help, I would go for a D&C (curettage), especially since you've been pregnant for longer. I also don't want to scare you.. and every body is different. This is my experience.

I hope you can find a place for all of this soon.
    Love

Thank you so much, Muus86, for sharing your experience! It's really tough that you had to go through that too... Take care!

Aw, I also got the sad news today that I had a miscarriage.
It was only 6 weeks, but it still hurts.
The miscarriage isn't really cooperating for me either.
I'm not bleeding much and I have huge cramps.
And this for 2 days already.
But I'm waiting it out, because since I'm not that far along, they can't really help much.
If it's not resolved within 2 weeks, I have to go to the gynecologist.
    Then they'll give a hand.
Lots of strength during these difficult days! I know how you feel.

What a sad little twinkie! And how annoying that you're having such bad cramps... From what I've heard, it usually means things are starting to move, but I can imagine you're going crazy after two days. Stupid that this is also happening on top of already having such bad news For me, both the bleeding and the stomach pain (I haven't really had cramps yet) have stopped since last night. The uncertainty is also exhausting... I'd rather get it over with as soon as possible so I can put it in a place and move on. Just waiting a bit more though. Wishing you lots of strength!

I wish you all lots of strength because I find this emotionally very heavy. Physically, I'm proud of my body for being so strong and recovering so quickly.

I was told on January 6th that I was likely going to have a miscarriage. There was no bleeding, just a very small fetus. I went to the gynecologist on January 9th, and they wanted to wait another week to see if the fetus would grow further. Unfortunately, last Friday I was told that this wasn't the case and that the fetus had stopped growing at 5 weeks. By then, I was already 9.4 weeks pregnant. Since the fetus hadn't grown for almost 4.5 weeks and I had no symptoms of a miscarriage, we decided to start with Cytotec. On Friday evening, I took the first pill orally to let my body recognize that something was wrong. 24 hours later, I was supposed to start inserting the Cytotec vaginally. I had read everywhere, like Muus86's story, how intense this would be and that it would involve a lot of pain and bleeding. So on Saturday evening, I started vaginally, repeating every three hours up to 4 times. In my case, the bleeding started after the second vaginal dose, but it was never more than 2-3 drops of blood, no clots, and no abdominal pain or cramps. On Monday, I went to the gynecologist because I thought the Cytotec hadn't done its job, but the ultrasound showed that my uterus was already almost completely clear. So Cytotec doesn't have to be intense and accompanied by pain and heavy bleeding. Today, the afterbleeding is already changing and it seems like these will be the last bits, but I'm not celebrating too soon. Whatever choice you make, spontaneous, Cytotec, or curettage, having a miscarriage is an emotional event that needs processing.

Lots of strength, and I hope you stay positive for a next pregnancy.

X, thank you for sharing your story. It's nice to hear that Cytotec doesn't always have to be so intense. At the same time, it's good to be prepared for the possibility that it could be. That's why I find it so nice to hear everyone's different experiences. I wish you lots of strength X with processing all of this, and let's indeed stay positive for a next pregnancy!

Twinkietje, how are your stomach cramps doing?

I've also had quite bad abdominal pain for the past two days, not cramps but a constant pain that's getting worse and worse. I expected abdominal pain to automatically come with bleeding, but that has completely stopped for the past 3 days; now when wiping, there's nothing to see at all. My stomach feels very bloated, and when I press on it, it feels like there's a lot of fluid inside. Could that be a sign that the blood is about to come?
  9. twinkietje #10

Aw, still having stomach cramps here. Sometimes they’re really intense too.
The bleeding isn’t a big deal.
So I hope it’ll pass soon, because the emotional pain is already enough.

    @aw,

I'm so sorry you had to go through this too.
    I've been through it myself.
At 9 weeks and 2 days of pregnancy, the heartbeat stopped.
That was on April 22, 2014. They told us to wait and see...
But it just kept going on and on.
On May 4, 2014, the bleeding started, and on May 5, 2014, it continued but didn't stop... I was bleeding so heavily
Until I almost fainted and my partner said, "Now we're going to the hospital."
So we called the maternity ward, the same place where I gave birth to my healthy son two years ago...
They checked internally to see if everything had passed. But no, I kept bleeding...
So they decided I needed a D&C nothing else to do, but the bleeding had to stop...
We closed the chapter by burying the ultrasound photo with a little poem..

    Dear little baby,

Like a butterfly, you fluttered in my belly and in my life,
Like a dove, you flew away from me into the heavenly light,
Like an angel, you are now with me forever,
My little star in the sky that lights up all people...

This is my story, and I truly don't wish it on anyone...
Hugs to all the girls who have had to go through something so terrible.

    Love, ju or wel mavanmi

@AW: The gynecologist is convinced that the baby is gone. So I just have to let the bleeding pass, and then everything will be okay again.
I have to say that I'm bleeding heavily today, so I think it's almost over.
I still have severe cramps though.
Hopefully it'll be over after the weekend.
It's so hard that it's not progressing! You can only really start mourning then.
I don't feel pregnant anymore from today onward.
The previous days I still had my symptoms, and that's not nice at all.
Now only sore breasts, but I always had that a bit during my period too.

Lots of strength to all the ladies going through this too!
It's tough, but we'll get through it!
I hope there's a positive pregnancy for all of you soon!

    Hi everyone,
I just got the gestational sac out.
It was pretty gross to look at
I think I'm almost through this and can finally close this chapter.
I'll never forget this little one and hope to keep a special place for it in my heart.

    @aw,

    That's intense, girl.
Write down all your questions and get well soon.
I didn't have any pain after the curettage.
But I did have a lot of muscle soreness.

@ Aw.. I get goosebumps reading your story. I know how you feel! You'll only know if you're clean after an ultrasound. I assume you'll have a follow-up check. I couldn't recognize the placenta or gestational sac anyway. There was so much clotting, I didn't look... lots of strength!

Just a quick update: during the ultrasound last Monday, it turned out my uterus wasn't completely empty yet; there was quite a bit of tissue stuck in my cervix - which explained the lower abdominal pain that just wouldn't go away. The gynecologist was able to remove most of it on the spot, a painful procedure, but I was already relieved that 'the way' was finally cleared this way and I didn't have to be D&C'd right away. I was allowed to give my body another week to naturally pass the last 'bits', so now I'm hoping that worked out! There's a follow-up ultrasound tomorrow, exciting but I'm hopeful...

Thanks for sharing and for listening, ladies, I really appreciated being able to let go of my little one here a bit! Love!

    @aw,

    How are you doing now?

    Hi lovely ladies,
I’d like to share my story because unfortunately, I had to go through it too. Last Monday we had the 8-week scan; I’d already had one before, but it was rescheduled two weeks earlier. Unfortunately, they told us that the baby’s heart had stopped beating, meaning the baby hadn’t developed properly. What a shock!
The next day I went to the hospital and there I chose medication. I really experienced this as '' hell ''. On Tuesday afternoon around two o’clock I was home, so I administered the medication. In the evening I started losing blood and also some clots. I had a lot of stomach pain and still too much blood loss. The midwife had a very intense time because I had to be woken up every hour because I passed out a few times.
Wednesday morning we had a consultation with the hospital. I ended up taking the second round of pills too. What pain. Not pleasant at all. It later turned out I’m also allergic, so that caused an extra intense reaction.
Thursday I lost a lot and I really thought, hey, this was it. So I said goodbye with my partner and afterwards I actually felt quite good. Today I was very tired, had a weird feeling in my belly. And this afternoon while showering the cramps started again and there was a lot of loss.
I don’t want to scare you, and I’m still '' in '' it now, but I really experienced it as hell. If this happens to you, which I hope it doesn’t, think it over very carefully. If this ever happens to me again, I’d choose a D&C.
    Love

After 9 weeks of pregnancy, the little heart stopped beating..
This morning I took 2x Cytotec vaginally, 3-4 hours later again.. by 3pm this afternoon the miscarriage had already started. Lots of bleeding and clots.. hopefully this stops soon..

First of all, lots of strength with the loss. I'm in the same situation. Two weeks ago I started bleeding a little. The midwife called and I had to wait a bit first. But I just became more and more unsure because I kept bleeding, which wasn't very much at the time anyway. On Thursday I went in and saw the little heart beating, everything looked good. I was then 6 weeks + 5 days. The next day I bled a lot more and my breasts no longer hurt. Unfortunately, the bleeding continued all weekend, with clots too. My gut feeling already told me enough. I knew it was over. On Monday it was really over and then the heart had stopped. Very sad. Because I was bleeding so much, we chose to let it come out naturally. On Saturday I lost the baby. By the way, I had no pain, just a lot of blood loss and a bit of a nagging feeling in my lower abdomen. Today I went for a check-up and everything was empty. Phew, what a relief. I've been dealing with this for 2 weeks. I'm still sad, but I also want to look forward, and hope that a healthy baby is granted to us. Lots of strength to you too with everything.
