What do you think is a normal bedtime for a 4-year-old?

Our son just turned 5 and goes to sleep around 7:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Mine is 4.5 but goes to bed at 6:30 PM already, but that's a drama, so maybe put them to bed an hour later?

You can always give it a try!

My daughter is 3.5 and always goes to bed by 7 PM at the latest, 7:30 PM. I hope to keep this up for as long as possible because then parents still have some time for each other in the evening (plus she gets very grumpy when she doesn't get enough sleep). But well, soon enough and I won't have to put her to bed anymore; she'll do it herself... How time flies so terribly fast

Then I'll build it up to 7 PM tonight.

It depends on many factors. How early is your little one awake. How much sleep does it need. When is it time for bed. How do they sleep through the night.

Personally, I think 7:30 PM is very late for bedtime. 6:30/7:00 PM seems like a good time for a toddler to go upstairs. Mine wake up between 6 and 7 AM. And they need 11 hours of sleep.

She wakes up between 7 and 8. She doesn’t need much sleep, and when she does sleep, she never wakes up.

If you put her to bed at 6:30 PM and she sleeps until 7 or 8 AM, that’s quite a lot.

That's also the problem, she doesn't need that much sleep, so sometimes she's awake until 10 PM, so maybe put her to bed a bit later.

I put her to bed at 7 pm, and by 7:30 I was back downstairs. She’s not asleep yet, but I’m curious if she’ll stay in bed.

It depends on so many things.. Here all the kids (5yr, 4yr, 1.5yr) go to bed around 8 PM. Can't do it any other way due to my and my partner's work.

My kids used to sleep at 7 pm until about half a year ago (they were 5.5 and almost 3 then). We’d often head upstairs at 6:15 pm. Now that the oldest is almost 6, he’s falling asleep later and trying to keep my 3-year-old awake. So we’re going up a bit later now, and they’re sleeping around 7:30 pm. The youngest, who’s 6 months old, always goes down a bit earlier, around 6:30 pm. Because of that, the other two go up a bit later (when the youngest is asleep).

If your toddler doesn't go to sleep until 10 PM, why go upstairs so early? Any idea why it's like that? Has it always been like that?

They've been sleeping worse since coming home from corona lockdown. Not enough stimulation during the day.

How old is your toddler? Just 4 or 6 makes a world of difference.

She's 4.5, and 6:30 PM seemed like a normal bedtime to me. Putting her to bed at 10 PM seems a bit late, haha.

Does she come down every time? My almost 6-year-old son does that a lot and then says: I can't sleep. When I ask him: what do you really want to ask me? Or: How can I help you? Then he wants me to sit with him for a bit longer, or his room is too warm and he wants to fall asleep in our bed. If I go along with what he actually wants, he falls asleep within 10 minutes.

So my tip is: put them to bed on time (around 7 PM) and when they come down, ask a bit more to find out why they can't/won't sleep. Getting angry often doesn't help much when putting them to bed.

She won’t come down, but every 5 minutes she screams from downstairs that I need to come up, and I have to give in because otherwise she’ll wake her 2.5-year-old brother. When I ask what she wants, it’s always something about playing—so just stalling for time.

Oh yeah, it started in March last year, out of nowhere. Until then, she sometimes slept from 5 PM to 7 AM.

I don't think it's a rare thing. And whether or not she falls asleep right away, you can't really influence that. Can't you teach her to be quiet? We did that with stickers. If she's quiet until morning, she gets a sticker (or something she likes too).
