Baby has an incomplete breech presentation

Hi everyone,

I'm almost 37 weeks pregnant now. Last week they found out that the little one is in a breech position. I had an external cephalic version last week, but unfortunately, it didn't work. I have an appointment with the obstetrician on Tuesday for a consultation!

My question now is: do you have any experience with C-sections?

I'm quite sporty and like going to parties. Since I'm pregnant and my due date is in early July, I specifically scheduled a party for early September so I could have some time for myself again! Do you think that's possible with about 8 weeks of recovery after a C-section?

I don't want to seem weird, but it's important to me that I can still do some fun things and keep doing my things! Of course, all for the baby's health, but also for me. Has anyone here had a breech birth?

Looking forward to your replies!

Hi there! With twins, the second one was completely breech. It was quite intense pushing, but I could still feel what I was doing (it was my third, so I had some experience). Total pushing time was 8 minutes, so not too bad. Is it allowed to deliver a breech baby? A normal delivery is of course preferred over a C-section due to recovery.

I'll hear on Tuesday if I'm allowed to give birth naturally, but I've done a bit of reading and you read that 40% still end up having an emergency C-section. Also, the chance that the baby will have oxygen shortage is higher... but are you really as good as recovered 8 weeks after a C-section? I'm definitely not someone who can sit still, I'm already noticing that during my leave!

A natural birth seems really risky to me, indeed due to the potential lack of oxygen. I think it also varies from woman to woman; one body recovers faster than another. But it seems like you're really well on your feet after 8 weeks!

Hi madame, how did the birth go???

    Hi babydoll
I’ve had contractions and just gave birth via C-section. It’s been 3 weeks now and things are getting better all the time—I can definitely move around! Did you have a planned C-section too? The first two weeks felt really tough because your body just doesn’t feel right.

Hi there, congratulations!! No, I don't have a scheduled C-section. I chose a natural birth and am still waiting for it to finally start. Got a check-up today!

@Madame So it's a C-section then! Glad you're on the mend. Our girl is still in breech, and the ultrasound showed she has very little amniotic fluid around her. So she probably won't turn. I don't want to do an external version, so I'll go for the C-section in the end. I find it all really nerve-wracking. One moment I feel so disappointed that I probably won't have a natural birth, and the next I'm okay with it—the nature has chosen that she doesn't want to turn. Did you have no doubts?

@orchidea I felt really bad about it, but mostly because I’ve been out of the loop for so long. I did get contractions a week before the scheduled date, so I got to experience that too, and I’m actually glad about it in hindsight! What are you dreading? The C-section itself or the recovery?

I've never had surgery before, so that's pretty scary to me. I'm not so worried about the recovery, though—that's just part of it. I was already less than 100% during half of my pregnancy due to complications, so I think the recovery will be fine, and hopefully, I'll be back to normal after that. On the other hand, I'm also worried that the baby won't do well because you're "taking" the baby out. In a natural birth, the baby gives a sign. Plus, it's my first baby, so I'm nervous about everything, I guess!

@orchidea I was lucky that the little one offered himself up because I was having contractions. Our son also ended up with a bulge on the back of his head because he had been in breech for so long. Apparently this is a characteristic thing; your baby doesn't have to have it, but it can happen. This was also my first surgery, but they are with you on the 10th and keep a very close eye on you. The spinal anesthesia was also really not bad; I found the IV and the catheter more unpleasant. Does your husband also stay to sleep in the hospital for the first 2 days?

@madame That sounds good, that there are so many people around who can step in if things go wrong. Tomorrow I'll hear the latest news on whether our baby has turned. I'm afraid not, but I'm still hopeful. If not, I'll be referred to the OB-GYN and we'll discuss a date. We have a young dog at home; if my in-laws aren't on vacation that week, they're happy to pick her up. Otherwise, my husband will have to sleep at home since my parents have a dog themselves and are happy to watch her during the day but can't do nights. So we'll have to wait a bit, but I'll know tomorrow how it goes! Are you recovering a bit and is your baby doing well?

@orchidea I also have a dog, which is a bummer because you can't walk her yourself. I'm 4 weeks further along now and have to say it's much better, but I'm still getting tired quickly. It should be gone in a couple of weeks. Next week I'm going back to the OB for a check-up.
    When is your due date?
  13. Orchidea #14

@madame You're right, we also have a young dog that pulls really hard. I can't walk her anymore because I keep getting strong, painful contractions. So I don't do that anymore. My parents are willing to step in and come by to help with her; she'll need to be let out in the afternoon anyway. My husband was completely convinced that the postpartum care worker would also walk the dog, but everyone has already explained to him that postpartum care is for the mother and baby. My due date is August 24th! Exciting. Do you still have frequent check-ups with the gynecologist?

Ooh, the last few steps then! My postpartum helper did let the dog out, so it really depends on which organization you're with and who you get. I happen to have a check-up next week; I gave birth to my son 5 weeks ago. They're doing an ultrasound of his hips in early August, which they always do for breech positions. A tip: try to go in sober and really take it easy for the first 2 weeks; it really makes a huge difference.
