How to give birth

Eleonore
Hi there!

Just a quick intro: my name is Eleonore and I'm 26 weeks pregnant with my first baby.

I've been thinking a bit about the birth lately. My boyfriend already has 3 kids from a previous relationship and he suggests I give birth in the bath. So here's my question: are there any ladies here who have thoughts on this? Negative comments are welcome too!

    Hi Eleonore,
Oh, I would have loved to do it too, and my husband was fully on board,
but we'd have to drive too far, so that party (ahem ahem) isn't happening..

But look it up, I haven't read any negative experiences!!
(except maybe that your poop will start floating Hahaha!!!)
No, it would be really good for catching the contractions and less painful in many cases,
you can still lie down on the bed at the expulsion face..
    Greetings Olivia..

    hey
my gynecologist advised against it. With our first baby, I wanted to do it too, but she told me not to, saying it felt gross to her. She explained that everything flows out during birth—all the "mess"—and then the baby swallows it. She found that unacceptable and was really against it. She said if there’s a pool with blood, mucus, or even feces in it, I wouldn’t go swimming in that, so why would I let my baby be born in such water? She also mentioned that normally, when a baby is born, they immediately gasp for air. If you give birth in water, this might not happen, and the baby could swallow water before being able to breathe. After thinking about it and discussing it with friends and family, I realized she had a point, so I didn’t want to do it anymore... but it’s a choice you have to make.

    Hi!

Yes, they do offer this at the hospital near me. I haven't brought it up with my OB-GYN yet because I think it's a bit too early.

I think you can never be too early with this, Eleonore.
You can take your time to look at all the options.

What Daisy said, I've never heard before.
In my opinion, that was an unjustified excuse from your gynecologist to avoid adapting to the situation.
(As if they'd rather not have you giving birth on a stool because of "their" backs.)
Everything that happens is very sterile and is closely monitored just like a regular birth.
The baby doesn't gulp any water at all!! They only start breathing when they're above water..
I actually found it fantastic to read that they don't automatically start gulping.
If it were all such a mess, they'd probably cancel it altogether.

At our hospital, it's not possible, but there is a birthing pool where you can actually stay in right up until the last moment. I did that the first time and it was really nice, even though I'm not really a "bath person." I hate taking baths and always just shower, but then it was truly night and day in terms of coping with the contractions. Once I got the urge to push, I got out and went to bed for the actual birth. Really a good compromise.
