Sudden fear of childbirth

I'm almost 29 weeks pregnant and have been suddenly overwhelmed by anxious feelings for the past week. During a check-up with my gynecologist last week, I experienced so much pain (to the point of tears) that I'm increasingly dreading the birth. Just the thought of something being pushed out of my womb scares me. I feel super responsible for bringing our (first) little one into the world safely, but I doubt I won't panic at that moment. I haven't had these anxious feelings until now, and I'm too down-to-earth to dive into hypnobirthing. In a few weeks, I'm going to an info session about breastfeeding and giving birth, but that's about all the preparation I've done. I have been reading more about giving birth at home in a bath, but I don't know if that will take away the fear I'm experiencing now.

Any tips?

Talk to your midwife about it. I can only say from my experience that at the moment of giving birth, I wasn't thinking about anything else. I was just focused on pushing the baby out, and yes, it hurts, but if you focus on pushing, it's doable. The moment she popped out felt like a relief, and the pain was gone instantly. Note that I'm only talking about the pushing contractions here. The dilation contractions took too long for me, and after a few hours, I asked for an epidural because I didn't want to suffer anymore since I still had a few hours to go because dilation wasn't progressing. In the hospital, there are plenty of options for pain relief to make childbirth bearable, but it's usually not completely pain-free.

    Hi!
I don't know if you want to give birth at home or at the hospital?
I can only tell you that once it starts, you won't worry so much about your fears anymore. For the pain, there's usually the option of an epidural or a mild sedative.
Every birth is different; it can be difficult or easy. The trick is to go with the flow when the time comes. The baby has to come out anyway, whether you want to or not. One tip: try not to fight the contractions but accept that you have to keep going.
Talk about it with your partner, and maybe giving birth in the hospital feels like a more reassuring option for you.
    Wishing you lots of success!

Hi Pleun, oh my, I see you're already past your due date. If it hasn't happened yet, stick to my experience: I promised myself to see my babies' first celebration at the birth. I was super giggly on the way to the hospital and stayed as happy as I could for as long as possible. We had a bath set up in the hospital where I could catch the contractions. We brought wax candles and nice music. My husband filmed occasionally and we teased each other a bit. The pain was very manageable. The last time they checked me, I was 5 cm dilated, and then it went really fast. I wanted to do the whole birth without anesthesia, but after half an hour... "Hmm... Okay, maybe I should get a shot." So I got out of the bath (aaauuuw), and they checked me again, and what do you know; I went from 5 to 10 cm in an hour, and less than ten minutes later, I had our daughter in my arms. That's how it can also go Good luck!
