when is the first ultrasound?

Hi ladies,

I think I'm 8 weeks pregnant now. But my GP saw early on (just after the scan) that my vitamin B levels were way too low. I got injections from 4 weeks pregnant because of this. The GP advised me to contact my gynecologist. I emailed my blood test results to the gynecologist and have an appointment tomorrow (at 8 weeks). Now I'm getting a bit worried because I hear/read that many women don't get their first scan until much later. So I'm wondering when you all had your first scan, if anyone has experience with low vit B, and what I can see/expect at the scan. I hope to hear a heartbeat and hope they can already see if our baby doesn't have spina bifida. I'm a bit concerned.
(Oh, maybe interesting, since it's a bit different here, I live in Belgium)

Greetings
xx

No experience with vitamin B deficiency, but my first ultrasound was at 6w+5d. And there was already a heartbeat visible, but not really a baby yet, more like a little rice grain (see my profile). 8 weeks is normal here in NL for the first ultrasound. Unfortunately, they can't see here yet whether a baby has an open back or not.

Good luck and hopefully lots of fun with the ultrasound tomorrow!

Droopy, I had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks because we got pregnant through IVF. At that time, there was a little rice-grain-like thing visible, but no heartbeat yet. I started to worry. A week later, another ultrasound showed a heartbeat. I was relieved. But during the nuchal translucency scan at 11 weeks, it turned out that our baby's skull wasn't developing properly. It's a type of open-spine defect, but this abnormality is incompatible with life. I was then cured. Doctors don't know what caused this abnormality. I took folic acid for 2 years, so it doesn't seem like it was due to a vitamin B deficiency. I also took other vitamins for pregnant women. For my next attempt at getting pregnant, I have to take 5 mg of folic acid, a higher dose to prevent recurrence.

I read that the baby's nervous system starts developing from week 4-5. Good that you had vitamin B injections then.

I don't want to scare you with my story. I just want to show that it's not necessarily related to a vitamin deficiency (in my case).

Regarding your question, these types of abnormalities can only be seen later in pregnancy, after 12 or sometimes 16 weeks. Nowadays, they do the NIPT test. This is covered by insurance. If you're worried, I'd suggest looking into it.

I'm rooting for you and your baby. You intervened in time. Keep us updated once you've had your first ultrasound.

    Greetings,
    Sophia

Droopy, I had an ultrasound today, and you can find it in my profile. I'm now 8 weeks and 1 day. Due to previous miscarriages, this was my second ultrasound.
We were able to hear the heartbeat.
For open spina bifida etc., we're waiting for the 12-week ultrasound. They'll also do a nuchal fold measurement and a prenatal screening test then.
    That's standard in Belgium.
