1 week less pregnant than expected..

Hi everyone, I just had my first ultrasound and it turned out I'm only 10 weeks pregnant instead of 11 weeks (which I thought). Should I be worried about that? The baby seemed perfectly healthy otherwise, you could clearly see the heartbeat and they were moving a lot too. I'll probably worry over nothing again, but I thought I'd ask anyway!

Lots of love

    No worries, it's possible your baby is having a growth spurt next week or is just on the lower end of the growth curve. And those ultrasounds don't tell the whole story either; sometimes the sonographers think they know better when your baby was conceived than you do.

    No worries, nothing wrong with that. If they measure half a millimeter off, that already gives you a week’s difference. Sonographers are indeed quite stubborn in our opinion and experience—they think they know better than you when your baby was conceived.

    If you were really sure about the conception date, I’d protest, because it costs you a week of maternity leave. It’s also nice to have a more certain date if you’re going over time.

    Here's one who thought they were short on time.. hihi completely forgot to add the 2 weeks you get as a gift.. O-)

    Yeah, so what about those 2 extra weeks?
    I counted from 2 weeks after my last period. Can't you get pregnant earlier because of ovulation?
  5. Esther #6

    Ovulation is 2 weeks before your last period. With a regular 28-day cycle, that's indeed also 2 weeks after the start of your cycle.

    Since you never know in advance when ovulation occurs, you can get pregnant as early as day 12, for example.

    I thought I’d be a week further along than expected. I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks, but it turned out I was only 6 weeks and 6 days. I’m having another scan on Wednesday, and we’ll see then! It’s possible the baby has grown well and I’ll be back on schedule, so they’ll adjust the due date by another week. So it could go either way!

    Hi,

    I’ve had this too. At first I was smaller, then further along at the second scan, and in the end they went with the middle ground for the due date. Now at 33 weeks it turns out the baby is still small. But they’re saying (note, it’s the hospital) that it’s not a big deal at all. Because usually there’s a growth spurt coming up.

    And I’d just get an extra check done at the second scan!

    With my first baby, I had to hear until week 30 that the baby was small... After week 30, I didn't have another ultrasound, and they only induced me at week 42. During the birth, they had to take a deep breath because if they had known the baby would be 8 pounds, they never would have used a vacuum extractor; they would have done a C-section right away. But since the head was already out, there was no turning back... (I'm 1.65m tall and weighed 49 kg back then).

    Turns out my little one had a huge growth spurt in the last 4 weeks!

    I'm pregnant again now and had ultrasounds at 8, 9, and 11 weeks. At 9 weeks, they said it's really not possible to determine exactly when you're due until week 12... it's just an indication, so you need someone with tons of experience who can tell you almost exactly how far along you are...

    Indeed, you're already pregnant 14 days before your period is supposed to start, so you count those days too.

    I can always feel my ovulation... For 4 days I suffer from pain, and then I know it's my ovulation. How do I know for sure? From the moment I get pain on the left or right side of my belly, I count 14 days later. If I get my period then, that was indeed my ovulation. And when I didn't get my period on that same day, I knew I was pregnant...

    Greetings

    We also thought we were further along, but no... According to the OB-GYN, implantation can be slower in some pregnancies, which means there's more time between conception and implantation. That's why it might seem like you're less far along...

    I just had another ultrasound, and the doctor pushed my due date back by 10 days! She said she's now sure that the little one waited a good week in my uterus for the best conditions of my uterine lining before implanting. No problem at all—it's something that's seen quite often!

    She even told me it's really a wonder of nature and that in some animal species, the embryo can wait for months until ideal conditions are present for implantation.

    So just think of it as a little miracle that your baby took its time with implantation, and uh... Maybe we'll get very patient, calm little ones? ;-)

    Had my first ultrasound today. I thought I’d be 9 weeks pregnant by Wednesday, but I’m actually less than 7 weeks. Unfortunately! I’m quite disappointed, I have to admit! But luckily, they could see that the little heart is beating, and that’s a good start—that’s what’s most important anyway. In three weeks, there’s a dating scan, and then they’ll be able to tell for sure how far along I am and when my due date is. So, we’ll just have to wait and see...

    Hey pris&tim, join the club! You do get a little click of realization when you suddenly realize you're not as far along as you thought! Especially when you follow that week-by-week development and feel every little change, getting excited about how big your baby is or what new features they've developed... Then it's such a bummer when you realize you're not quite there yet. I totally get that - it's frustrating to feel like you're two weeks behind in that progression! Hihi Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy!

    Hey AppelSien,

    Yeah, that's right, it's like going back in time. I was almost at 9 weeks with my pregnancy week calendar etc., but luckily we saw a beating heart! In 3 weeks I'll know exactly how far along I am and when my due date is, so the countdown begins again hihi. They couldn't say exactly, just under 7 weeks she said. So yeah, we're waiting again

    It's about the fact that the sonographer also has quite a big margin of error, and they know it. If parents know exactly when they conceived, that's a lot more reliable in many cases, I think.

    It gets tricky when you go past your due date. Then it becomes quite dangerous if you're suddenly a week off. It can also be annoying or disadvantageous when it comes to planning maternity leave.

    According to my count, I’m 7 weeks pregnant, but according to the first ultrasound, I’m 5 weeks and 4 days. And no heartbeat was visible. The gynecologist said it’s still too small to see a heartbeat, so I have to go back on Wednesday (12 days after the first scan). I’m really worried! Has anyone experienced this too?
  15. Anonymous Guest #16

    Had an ultrasound today. My last period was February 12, so the midwife calculated 9 weeks.
    But the ultrasound showed it was only 6 weeks based on measurements. The little heart was beating, but it still worries me.

    It was 0.410 cm

    @Anoniem,

    It could be that conception happened later, so no worries, they'll keep a close eye on you. I'm also a week ahead, which I don't quite get either, but hey, they know what they're doing. I'm exactly 10 weeks today... But my last period was on Feb 13, so honestly, I don't quite get it either. And Anoniem, if you keep worrying, just ask for another ultrasound.

    @MavanMi
    Thanks for your reply.
    I just asked the midwife to explain it again.

    Now I feel a bit more at ease.

    My first period was on February 12th.

    Estimated conception: February 28th, assuming a 30-day cycle.

    Due date: November 21st.
    So indeed, I'm 6 weeks pregnant and 0.410 cm is normal.

    Assuming a 28-day cycle, I could be 7 weeks; she also said measuring is quite difficult.

    1 mm off and it makes a week's difference.

    I'll be back in 2 weeks.

    @Anoniem,

    oh, that's a relief! I hope you have a lovely scan in two weeks :-)
