1st trimester
Just pregnant and sick..
27 replies · page 1 of 2
I’m 7 weeks pregnant on Monday and feeling really awful. I’ve had a painful hunger sensation all the time, pain in the lower right abdomen, stomach ache, headache, and threw up this afternoon. I feel incredibly weak, dizzy, sick, and drinking and eating barely go down. Everything is fine with the baby since we had an ultrasound on Thursday. I don’t want to complain, but does anyone have tips for me? I can barely get out of bed!
Best, A

Hi A, I totally get you. I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my third baby and feeling sick. I eat small bites every few hours. I don't eat carbs because vomiting makes them hurt so much. Resting a lot helps too. Fresh air can really help, even if you don't feel like it, even if it's just 10 minutes. Get your blood checked, maybe your iron is too low... There's just nothing you can do about it. I'm so jealous of women who don't feel sick at all and are completely happy.
Hope you start feeling better soon.

Hi Bien,
Glad you understand. Got so sick on Saturday, really awful that we ended up at the urgent care clinic. They couldn't find anything, urine was fine, inflammation markers were good. So back home with the message that they don't know what it is but they know this is abnormal pain. I had to call if it got worse. Luckily I feel a bit better now, but I'm still extremely weak, tired and down. At least I'm out of bed now haha. Hopefully everything continues to go well with the baby, that's the most important thing for me.

Here’s another one who doesn’t feel like a radiant pregnant woman, okay.
I’m now 11 weeks pregnant and have been home since the sixth week. I’m completely exhausted, sleeping around 14 hours a day. The nausea seems to be easing a bit, but I still strongly dislike eating; I eat every two hours because I also have blood sugar issues.
Then I also have very low blood pressure since becoming pregnant, so I often feel dizzy and have to take it really easy. Unfortunately, I’ve already fainted once.
Today I also had a day where I felt really upset about how I was feeling and cried on my husband.
Well, I can’t really do anything about it, but I do get jealous of women who don’t have any issues and happily hop through their entire pregnancy.
And I also have to bite my tongue sometimes to avoid saying something unpleasant when people congratulate me on the pregnancy and (without asking how I’m feeling) tell me to enjoy this time.
Fortunately, I have a very understanding husband. He and my mom now also do a large part of the housework. I try to take it easy and do things like wash a few dishes or tidy up occasionally. I can’t do much more. Fortunately, my supervisor is very understanding.
So far, the little one seems to be doing well, which I think is the most important thing.
And for the rest... I’ll just take it day by day.
Strength to you ladies...and for later: a beautiful, healthy baby that we can hopefully enjoy a lot of. -

@A that sucks. Did they not give you any medication? I can understand why you're going crazy.
I had Emesafene for my 2nd kid, which worked pretty well against the nausea. Maybe you can ask about that.
I'm going to the doctor later. I have such bad stomach pain and it feels like my food isn't digesting. I work evenings and that's so hard; I'm so broken down, plus 2 young kids during the day.
@Mandy I understand you too. I can really sleep all day but I'm with my 2 kids during the day, work in the evenings, and get up early in the mornings.
I understand when you say you're not enjoying it yet. But from experience, I know that once these symptoms go away, you'll enjoy it so much.. and indeed, it's hard when people say it's normal and to enjoy it blah blah.
I hope you both feel better soon.
I'm glad we understand each other. Sometimes I feel like people who know think "oh, you're just complaining" especially if they've had a normal pregnancy. -

@mandy, that's so sad! Hopefully you can start enjoying it soon..
@bien, I went for a blood test, everything was fine. But I'm so incredibly tired, with stomach pain and dizziness etc. I'm just taking it easy. Luckily I'm still at home because of an injury, so no one has to know the reason, which is nice. Next Wednesday I'm going to the midwife for the first time, hopefully she can help me with everything. You can already see it on my belly pff, hard to hide!!! -

That's tough, A. Especially that stomach pain sounds pretty scary to me too.
I actually let my employer know about it after 6 weeks... I had called in sick on Friday saying I had fainted, but when I kept feeling so dizzy and awful, I came clean on Monday. Though I did ask them to keep it quiet for now.
So if you really can't work, there's no other way. Officially, you never have to give a reason for being sick, although most managers like to hear one. If they don't trust that you really can't work, they can have you examined by the occupational health doctor. You can be honest with them, and they aren't allowed to tell your employer what's going on if you don't want them to. They do give advice on whether or not you can work.
Oh, and my belly also started swelling up quickly. My intestines got so bloated from the fluid and issues with constipation and such. I've been wearing maternity pants for going out for a week now. They feel great....but here you can see my belly really well in
Well, anyway, everyone knows now.
Strength and I hope you get some clarity from the midwife.
Let me know how you're doing? -

@A I had such bad stomach pain with my first baby too. Your uterus starts getting really bigger and your ligaments begin to stretch, especially if it's your first time.
Is it getting any better?
Just give in to that tiredness. Your baby is asking for a lot of energy in the first 3 months to grow anyway.
@mandy
I also told my boss last week because at work I was constantly running to the trash can or the toilet.. luckily he reacted very well and it's a boy and I do physical work so he's now super overprotective that I don't lift heavy things or anything, very sweet.
Friday my first ultrasound super exciting..
Weird right that your belly is already showing so much.. I can't hide it anymore either
Long live winter with the slightly oversized sweaters haha -

I was also really sick in the beginning. Everything was gross; I even had to gag at the thought of having potatoes lying around that I had to peel, or dirty dishes in the dishwasher. I was crying in the supermarket because I found nothing appetizing and didn't know what we should all eat for weeks on end—from 6 to 18 weeks. So hopefully, it passes quicker for you.
I finally went to the doctor for pills and got suppositories from the homeopath beforehand, but that didn't work for me. I also had reflux, excessive saliva production (which made me feel very nauseous), and pain in my shoulder blades from the stomach acid.
After 18 weeks, my appetite slowly came back. I hope you don't have it as badly as I did. I spent weeks on the couch throwing up and got quite grumpy and desperate from it. I thought I was going crazy, but luckily I saw that others had it just as extremely.
Now it's been going well for weeks, though with other side effects. Wishing you lots of success and strength! -

Hi lovely ladies,
Thanks for your replies. I'm doing a bit better now, thankfully. Had a rough week last week, super tired, nauseous, dizzy, and I even fainted. Had my blood drawn, but all the values are good. They think it's really due to my digestive issues. Normally they already drain a lot of energy from me, and now even more... So we're just going to go with that. I've also been pretty constipated the last few days, but thankfully that's improving too. Going to see the midwife for the first time next Wednesday, quite nerve-wracking! It's just a chat, but still, everything is exciting and new to me!
I've lost a kg, and yet I can barely do anything haha. I really want to keep it secret until 12 weeks, hope that works out..

Hi A,
Isn't it weird? I first lost a kilo too. Now I've gained it all back and then some... and still no pants fit. So strange...
But I'm glad things are improving a bit.
I'm still exhausted, sleeping 14 hours a day. And dizzy too, bleh.
Good luck on Wednesday, let me know how it went?
I'm going back to the hospital on Thursday. -

Hi Mandy,
Oh wow, that’s such a shame
I hope you feel better soon and can enjoy yourself! I finally had a day today where I thought, yay, I’m having a baby, and that’s totally fine for me!! Haha.. But still taking it easy because the tiredness hits you pretty fast haha.
Is Thursday for the ultrasound or just a regular check-up?
I’ll let you know on Wednesday how it went. -

Thursday we have an ultrasound, specifically the nuchal translucency scan.
After that, there's another appointment with the gynecologist. -

Okay, that's all exciting too!! Let us know how it turns out? -

Glad to hear things are going a bit better for you ladies.
@Mamdy have fun at the ultrasound, it's always nice to see your baby. Did you get your blood drawn? Is your iron not too low?
@A good luck at your first visit, very exciting. I'm really curious to hear your stories.

Hi Bien, I’ve added the question about whether they can prick for blood, including for iron, to my list of questions for this Thursday! But thanks for thinking along with me. -

Phew, the first appointment with the midwife is done! Got a lot of info, hope I remember it all haha. Everything was fine except I have excess weight, so I have to give birth in the hospital, which I actually wanted anyway haha!
Otherwise, I just need to live healthily, like I already do, and just play a bit with food etc. to keep my bowels happy, and give in to my fatigue and symptoms. My belly is so incredibly bloated today, it feels like I'm 5 months pregnant, not normal! haha... On the 16th we're getting the next ultrasound, so exciting!! Hope everything goes well then and that we can still see a healthy pregnancy. And yes, we're finally going to tell everyone!! Unfortunately, I have to tell it at work tomorrow already, due to the medications I work with. I find this really nerve-wracking, because I haven't been working there very long, I've already been on sick leave for a while, was supposed to start again on Monday and then tomorrow I'll get the news that I'm pregnant pff.. And now that I'm "just a temp worker"! Pretty nerve-wracking, really scared they'll fire me
. Hope not, but I'm counting on it.. and yes then the financial picture comes into play again.. Pff.. worries worries worries!!!
@ Mandy, good luck with your ultrasound tomorrow!! -

Glad to hear everything is okay so far.
Will you continue to be under the care of your midwife, or are you being referred to a gynecologist?
Take good care of yourself. I understand it’s tough having to announce your pregnancy so early as a temp worker, but your health and your baby’s health are what matter most.
By the way, they can’t fire you just because you’re pregnant! So keep an eye on your rights, girl.
And you’ll hear from me tomorrow. -

We just got back from the hospital.
We got the results of the combined test right away, and they were really good, so no further investigation is needed.
The ultrasound itself was also beautiful; we saw everything: chin, nose, heart (seen and heard), all arms and legs. He even waved a bit because he was moving around nicely
It's really lovely to see how complete a little one already is.
There's a new photo on my profile.
I'm very tired but also happy.
Oh, and they immediately took blood for all sorts of tests. I'll get the results for everything in 4 weeks. Only for the iron levels, I'll be called tomorrow right away.
