Positive test, what now?

Elien
Hi everyone!
I took a positive test yesterday morning! We're absolutely over the moon, and according to the internet, my due date is June 24, 2015.
This is our first time, so it's all very new to us.
Should we call the GP first, or did you all go straight to the gynecologist? How long did you wait before telling people around you?
I'm really curious to hear your responses.

    Hi!

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I don't know if you're from Belgium or the Netherlands, but in the NL you can calmly look for a midwife near you now. You can call them to make an appointment/first ultrasound, and there's really nothing else you need to do right now!!

Yes, watch your diet, take folic acid if you haven't already, and/or take pregnancy vitamins if necessary. (Maybe also take a look at the Moeders Voor Moeders website.. it would be fun if you join in, but it's not mandatory of course )

In Belgium it's arranged differently, I think, but I don't know for sure.

When you tell people depends on you two. We told right after the positive test. Others wait until after 12 weeks or after the first ultrasound.

    Hey,

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I'm from Belgium and the usual custom here is to have blood tests done by your GP and make an appointment with an obstetrician. Usually, the first ultrasound is at 8 weeks. Then you visit the obstetrician every 4 weeks. I had my first ultrasound done at 9 weeks, but it turned out I was already 12 weeks pregnant (as seen on the ultrasound). You can't fully rely on online due date calculators. According to the internet, my due date was May 22, but the obstetrician said it was May 12, 2015.

Regarding telling people, we only told our parents that we're pregnant, with the message not to say anything further until the ultrasound confirms everything is okay. Today is a family celebration, and we're going to tell the rest of the family because the ultrasound is fine and we're already 12 weeks along, and usually, the risk of miscarriage has decreased significantly by then.

    Kind regards,
    Ukje

Thank you so much, I'm from Belgium so I think I'll make an appointment with the doctor tomorrow..
As for telling people, I'd rather wait until we're sure everything is okay..
    Greetings

Other than that, I haven't really had many complaints, except for very sore breasts and some cramps..
Do you guys have them too?

I had cramps at the beginning of my pregnancy too. They could be from your uterus growing or your intestines. But that's over now.

I'm just very nauseous and tired and hope this gets better soon.

    Hey Elien!

I waited a week first to make sure it wasn't a joke. Then I started looking for a midwife practice myself, and guess what? There was one right around the corner!

As for telling people: yeah, do you tell them or not... I initially wanted to tell everyone right away, but then I discussed it with my husband. After chatting about it for a while, we agreed that we wouldn't tell anyone until the first ultrasound (which I'm having at 9 weeks). But the day after that, I was in the car and thought, "what if something goes wrong?? Then no one would know I was pregnant, no one would know what I'm going through." So I chatted with my husband again, and we decided that only my family (parents, sister, and brother) and his parents should know. I'll tell my friends after the ultrasound or after 12 weeks (we'll see what a good moment is).

Now we're hoping everything stays on track and we'll have a beautiful little human in our arms in June!!

    That's lovely! Congratulations to everyone!
I'm still having cramps and now I've got a bit of light brown bleeding..
    I'll call the doctor tomorrow..

    Hi,

We told the family and our closest friends pretty quickly. We thought we were almost 7 weeks, but it turned out to be 5, so yeah :-p. But I'm glad we did this, I had some bleeding and need to take it easy for a few days, and I'm not allowed to work. So then someone can always drop by for some company so I'm not alone all day :-D.

But you should do what feels right for you.

    Good luck!

    Hi Sofie,
Indeed, glad you mentioned it then..
Did you also have cramps with your bleeding? I’ve got quite severe cramps..
    Greetings

    Hey Elien,
I don't have real cramps, sometimes a sharp pain, but I think it's from my intestines (I have a really hard time going to the toilet :-p).
Best to go to the gynecologist, mine said that any bleeding should always be taken seriously.

    Good luck!
    Greetings

    Hey Elien,

I don't have any bleeding but I still have (now at 7 weeks pregnant) really bad menstrual cramps. Not constant but in waves...
If I were you, I'd also pay a visit to the doctor, just to be sure.
I did read on the internet that some people had a few days of light bleeding but it turned out to be implantation bleeding.

But stand up for yourself and just demand an ultrasound or something!

    Hi everyone,
    Thank you for the responses!
I'm still experiencing bleeding with those slimy clumps.. (sorry for the details)
I have an appointment with the GP at 7 PM.. hopefully it's nothing serious but I'm super worried :-(

Elien, how did it go with the doctor??
  14. Elien started this #15

No wiser, it could go either way..
They took blood and I can call Sewwes for the results.. If it's positive, I need to get my blood drawn again at the end of the week to see if the levels have risen or fallen..
    So, wait and see :-(
  15. louise #16

Oh, what a bummer! It would have been great if you'd gotten some more clarity! Keep us posted!

    Hi Louise,
The hormone levels were so low that it was probably an early miscarriage :-(
Really sad, I have to go back to the doctor on Friday for a new blood test..
    Greetings

Ohhhhh what a bummer, girl!! Wishing you lots of strength!!
The only comfort is that you now know you can get pregnant. Some ladies have been trying for ages and have never held a positive test in their hands. It's a meager comfort, but you have to keep seeing the positive things now!
Good luck with everything, and I hope you get pregnant again soon.

That's right, we know at least that it can work out and will definitely keep trying.
    Thanks for the support!

    Good luck!
