Vanishing Twin

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had experience with a Vanishing Twin?

I always thought I was just pregnant with one baby. I just had an ultrasound (I'm 14.5 weeks pregnant) and they saw a membrane that suggests twins, but they only see one baby, so they said I must have had twins but one has disappeared.

I'm not really convinced that one was lost. I haven't had any bleeding or cramps, nothing that would indicate a miscarriage of one of the babies.

Could they be wrong and could it turn out later that there are actually two babies? Maybe they're lying behind each other and that's why one was missed?

I hope someone can tell me more or has experience with this.

Greetings, Wendy

Hi Wendy, yes, I have experience with this! Our oldest is one of a vanishing twin. We only found out about it at 11 weeks during the first ultrasound. They saw another sac, but it was much smaller than our son's. I still have an ultrasound photo of it; you can see my son (at 11 weeks in terms of growth) and next to it, a gestational sac with a fetus of about 6-7 weeks. With the latter, there wasn't really a visible fetus, nor any heartbeat activity. According to the midwife, it was already "disappearing" (sounds quite peculiar, doesn't it?).

I didn't notice or feel anything, not even bleeding or cramps. After the birth, we never saw any trace of it again; it was probably absorbed by my body, no idea.

According to the midwife, this happens quite often, and you don't necessarily have to notice it. With ultrasounds being done earlier and earlier, you hear about it more often. You can get cramps or bleeding from it, but that doesn't have to be the case.

So, the chance that there's a second baby hiding behind it that is still growing is probably very small.

Good luck, and glad things are going well with the little one!

    Hi Sandra,

Yes, I should mention that this is already the 3rd ultrasound. Earlier they didn't notice it, but now they're finding out that I actually had twins. It's quite strange, considering that one passed away. That's really very sad. I still hope that it will be visible in a next ultrasound.

I tried to add a photo, but it didn't work. Thanks for your reply anyway. Fortunately, everything is going perfectly well with the surviving baby.
