Miscarriage or early pregnancy?

Hi everyone, I'm pregnant with our first baby. I've always had a long cycle (about 42 days). Still, I got pregnant after just 4 months (with the help of an ovulation test). I'm super happy about that because you often hear that if you have a long cycle, you're not very fertile.

I went to the midwife yesterday for my first ultrasound. My last period was

Oh sorry, that went wrong. I think I accidentally hit send already....

But my last period was December 17th. According to the midwife's calculator, I should be 9 weeks pregnant now. But you have to subtract 2 weeks quickly because of my long cycle. However, the ultrasound showed the baby is only the size of a 5.5-week pregnancy. So it's unclear if it's a miscarriage or if I'm pregnant but shorter than expected. We're getting a new ultrasound in 2 weeks to get clarity. I find it all so stressful. Has anyone experienced this before? When do you actually say you're pregnant? I had a positive ovulation test on January 7th, so if conception happened a few days after that, it's possible I'm only 5.5 weeks along.

I think you're pregnant after conception, but your body only knows you're pregnant after implantation. I'd say either way, but I think it only makes a difference of a few days. Medically speaking, I believe it's from the moment of conception.

The first ultrasound is good for determining how old your baby is, but if you're off by just a millimeter, that already means a week's difference, so don't fixate too much on it. The baby will be as old as it is and will come when it comes :-)

As long as you don't have abdominal pain or bleeding, I'd just assume everything is fine!

    Hi Jenny,

Thanks for your reply. I'm trying not to worry too much about it. The pregnancy symptoms are still lingering, which is actually a good sign. So, just wait and see!

    Hi,
when I was pregnant with my first, the ultrasound said I was 3 weeks behind what was expected. But I knew exactly when I ovulated, so I knew it couldn’t be true. Now I’ve got one of those running around who’s almost 2 years old. :-D Wouldn’t worry too much about it. Greetings

Thank you for your responses. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage two days ago. It's a big disappointment, of course, but I'm not going to give up. Hopefully, next time will bring more luck!

Sorry to hear that. I had a miscarriage in April too and I'm now 6 months pregnant. I'll be rooting for you. x
