Do you want to do a combination test, yes or no?

Ladies, what are you doing? We're really struggling with whether to do a combined test or not.

-----------
The combined test is a screening during pregnancy. It calculates the chance of having a child with Down syndrome. Besides the chance of Down syndrome, the result of the combined test also gives information about the chance of Patau syndrome and Edwards syndrome. You receive this information unless you indicate that you don't want to know. The test consists of a combination of two screenings: 1. a blood test for the pregnant woman, in the period of 9 to 14 weeks of pregnancy; 2. an ultrasound scan (nuchal translucency measurement), in the period of 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy.

I had it done because that test poses no risk to the baby at all. But of course, you make that decision completely on your own. Good luck with your choice!

If it's not harmful to either of you, I'd go ahead and do it.
Some people don't care how the baby comes into the world because your child is your child, and that's definitely true.
I'm also pregnant right now, and my partner and I have decided that if something isn't right, we won't bring a disabled child into the world. Whether it's mental or physical. So it really depends on how you look at it.

Personally, I'd recommend you take the tests and see the results. I don't know how old you are? But under 40, you have very little chance of having a child with Down syndrome, by the way.

I would definitely do the test. They look at several things, like trisomy 13, trisomy 18, and triploidy.
They calculate a risk, and if your risk is 1 in 200, you can choose to have an amniocentesis. Then you know if you're one of those 200.

I didn't want to do it during my first two pregnancies. Everything was welcome, and no one mentioned that they also test for other things. However, during the second pregnancy, they found out at 21 weeks that our baby had triploidy. We had to let the baby come because it wasn't compatible with life. This story was also posted on Brabbels. Because of this, we did have a combined test done during the third pregnancy because we didn't want to go through that again at 21 weeks. This lady and our first midwife are both great.

Hopefully, this helps you with making your decision. The chance that something comes out of the combined test is very small, but it gives certainty.

    Ladies,

Thank you so much for your responses.
I think we'll go ahead with the test as well.
It's not a good life for yourself or for the child if it turns out to have a serious disability.

    Thanks!

Just wanted to let you know that we've decided to go ahead with the test.
Tomorrow afternoon we're going to the gynecologist for the nuchal translucency scan.

We'll get the results right away.

I'm starting to feel a bit nervous now.

I don't know what I'd do myself, but I think I wouldn't choose that... A baby is a life, and how they come into the world doesn't matter to me; I see it as my duty to take care of it.

But it's your choice whether to go through with it, and it's so nice that there's a positive result!! Enjoy your pregnancy..

    Love, sweetheart

    Hello Heart,

You say that, but what if you know your baby won't live long and will suffer unbearable pain for the short time they're with you, and there's nothing you can do about it? You can only make them as comfortable as possible with the doctors, but the pain remains. Then you make a choice out of love. I think the test is also there to see if your baby has a congenital abnormality and how severe it is. If your baby has a condition but can live happily, they're always welcome. But what if the condition is like the one mentioned above?

Unfortunately, many people don't think about these kinds of things.

I definitely thought about this during my pregnancy... Due to my religious beliefs, I will always choose life. If I feel uncertain, I can hand it over to God. God decides over life and death, not me! Sometimes babies die in the womb, which is very sad, but we don't have control over that... Sometimes decisions and considerations are really hard!! I completely understand that.
