My girlfriend is pregnant for the 2nd time now, but it's my first time!! She thinks she's suffering from prenatal depression! I googled it and I do see similarities! But now she can't stand me touching her! And she's quite snappy with me! Has anyone else had experiences with this?

Thx T

    Hi first-time dad,

If she really has a postpartum depression, it's important for you and a friend to realize that this just happens to you and that there wasn't much you could have done about it. You can't just snap back to being cheerful when you have a depression because it's genuinely an illness. It's a chemical imbalance in your brain that only goes away with time and maybe some help.

For her, it's important that you support her, and if she doesn't feel like doing anything at the moment, you'd best go along with that.

Some dips pass on their own, but it might also be useful to talk to your GP. They can assess what a good next step would be.

    Love, Nora

Thanks Nora for your reply! She doesn't want to go to the doctor! I can understand that it's hard for her and want to support her! But then she gets angry looks and I really can't do much good for her! Sometimes I'm scared for our relationship! But I wouldn't want it to fall apart! She's really not happy with her body! She won't let me look at or touch her! Man this is tough! We've only been together for 4 months! But we both want a baby! She's now 7 weeks and 5 days, I've already read that it might pass after 11-12 weeks so I guess I'll have to swallow the comments for now!

    Best, T

May I ask why she herself thinks it’s depression? Someone who reacts a bit coldly and has trouble with touch isn’t necessarily depressed right away! A changed hormone balance can also be a reason for this..
The reason I say this is that depression can never be diagnosed that quickly. If there is depression, there are psychiatrists in various hospitals specialized in pregnant women who are depressed.. Also to build the bond between mother and child...

    Good luck!

Oh no.. I feel for you, I'm at 16 weeks now and I wasn't very nice to my boyfriend in the weeks leading up to this. Really, really sorry because he does everything for me.
It's getting better now since I'm starting to feel a bit better, but I still can't stand any smells.

People often think too quickly that they have depression, but only a psychologist or psychiatrist can diagnose that.
Maybe she says this to give it a reason and secretly doesn't want to lose you (awareness of behavior).
I would ask why she thinks she has this depression?
What does she feel? It's important to know so you can empathize a bit.

Don't argue with your girlfriend, no matter how hard it is, it's pointless and just leads to arguments and stress.

And maybe a nice pampering day is an option.
Or maybe shopping for baby stuff together, mothers always find that really fun.

Good luck and lots of strength!

I had postpartum depression after giving birth. And now I'm pregnant again. I'll start on hormones right after delivery to prevent a depression. A prenatal or postnatal depression is often the result of changes in your hormones. And has nothing to do with your psyche. One body can handle that better than another. I'm also noticing mood swings now but that doesn't mean a depression. That's just part of it too. Are you still worried? Otherwise I have a tip...
