Period, but still a very positive pregnancy test.

Hi everyone,

I've had something really strange happen. My partner and I have been trying to conceive for a while, and we already have a healthy 19-month-old daughter. Last weekend was when I was due for my period, and I took an early pregnancy test on Thursday and Friday, both negative. On Thursday evening, I had pinkish/brownish discharge, so I thought I had just gotten my period. Still, I took another test with first morning urine on Friday morning just to be sure, but it was completely negative.

That Saturday, I really started bleeding with mild abdominal/back pain and bright red blood. Naturally, I didn't think for a second that I could be pregnant anymore, until today. It's now Wednesday (almost a week later than that negative test on Thursday), and I'm waking up feeling incredibly nauseous. The veins on my breasts are more visible, and I'm experiencing what feels like hot flashes. Something I normally only get during my period, but this time it kept going on.

On a whim, I took a test I had lying around about an hour ago. It wasn't first morning urine, and I didn't really need to pee, so just a few drops, and within seconds, a thick positive line appeared on the test! I'm absolutely stunned! I'm also quite worried about the bleeding now. During my previous pregnancy, I had light bleeding around my expected period, but this was much more! Now I'm afraid it might have been a very early miscarriage last weekend, but it's strange that the test on Friday was negative and now, almost a week later, it's clearly positive. Our GP is on vacation, and this doesn't really seem like something for the emergency doctor.

I know you guys probably don't have an answer either, but are there any ladies here who have had such quite heavy bleeding and still ended up with a healthy pregnancy?

Thanks in advance!

Best, Willemijn

I have friends who still got their period during the first three months and were actually already pregnant. Sometimes your body really plays tricks on you. I’d definitely go to the GP for a blood test so you know for sure and discuss the bleeding with them (maybe they can do an internal ultrasound to see what’s going on in your uterus ). Good luck!

    Hi Iza,

Thanks for your message! It’s reassuring to hear that there are more girls who have experienced some kind of irregularity. Yes, I’ll give my GP a call soon. I keep putting it off, but I’ll just do it. Thanks for your advice!

    Best wishes,
    Willemijn

    Hi ladies,
I have a question. Two days before my due date, I had bleeding. Has anyone here experienced this? I don’t understand anything about it.

I had exactly the same thing. 4 days before my due date, I had one day of brown discharge, then one day of blood. After that, it stopped. On the day of my due date, nothing at all, and now two days later, still nothing. I'm wondering if maybe it's just late??? I really want to buy a test today.
Do you know anything more by now?

I have a question about positive pregnancy tests from urine and blood. I did both tests and they were positive, but I had already been experiencing bleeding for 5 days. What could that be? Please. I would really like an answer.

At first I had stomach cramps, I’m getting my period, I change my sanitary pad every day, I drink lots of water and I pee a lot, and because of my period I’m losing a lot of blood and I feel dizzy and have a headache under my belly on the left and right side and my back hurts in the same way, it’s extremely painful and I had to go to the doctor, talked about my period with heavy bleeding and I have an iron deficiency, then I take vitamin D3 which is very good for my body, my belly is doing strange movements like kicking, my breasts are sore, it hurts a lot, I got medication, the combination pill to have less bleeding, I want kids, I feel like I’m thinking about it, I feel good in my skin, I’m also positive, it’s clear that I want to get pregnant and I’m trying to get pregnant like I eat healthy like baked goods, eggs, drink milk, buttermilk which has vitamin D in it and fruit and vegetables, my belly is growing, I don’t know what to do, can you give me a tip, I feel sad and my whole body hurts, can you give me tips, thanks in advance

Hi there ladies, I have a question I just can't figure out.. For the past 2 weeks I've been experiencing light bleeding, (last Sunday I took my last contraceptive pill.) During the week I still had some bleeding, but on Wednesday I started losing significantly more blood than in the previous days. I initially thought it was just my period. But since I've been experiencing a few extra physical symptoms, I took a test today and it was clearly POSITIVE. My question is: AM I NOW PREGNANT WHILE UNREGULAR?

Hi Willemijn, I went through exactly the same thing as you. I had an ultrasound today but they couldn't see anything at all, so they think it was an early miscarriage. I find it really strange that the test was negative on the day the bleeding started and positive a week later. Have you had an ultrasound yet? I still have to wait 2 weeks and then do a test again... I don't expect things to be okay anymore. Hopefully you have better news!! Greetings Nicole

Halloween. I'm Natasja. I took two pregnancy tests last month and they were both positive, plus today the first test is still positive, but I just had bleeding exactly like my period would have. Should I be worried? Greetings, Natasja.

    Hi Natasha,

Is there a lot of bleeding? I'd call the midwife today. I don't want to scare you, but I also had a lot of bleeding during my first pregnancy, and it ended in a miscarriage. Sometimes there are other reasons for it, so it doesn't have to be serious! Just call to be sure!

Natasja, I’d definitely reach out to the midwife.
It might not be great news either. Even if you’re still testing positive, hCG isn’t immediately gone from your body if things go wrong.

    HCG is hCG, of course

I have a question: if you take a pregnancy test during your period, can it still be positive, or is that impossible? Has anyone experienced this?
  14. s #15

I only think if you mistake another bleeding for your period while you're actually pregnant. I thought I was on my period but was already 7 weeks pregnant and had a miscarriage.

    Thanks for the reply, greetings!

Hi! I took two tests. I was overdue, and now I'm on my period. What could that be?

    Hi ladies

I was supposed to get my period on Tuesday, but it didn’t happen. Wednesday night into Thursday, I had severe pain and it turned out I did get my period after all, since my cycles always last 4 days, it stopped on Saturday morning. I feel very nauseous and have had a headache since Thursday morning. Is it possible that I could still be pregnant?
  18. Lon Guest #19

    Hi Nicole,

    how did your story end?
I have about the same situation.. I think I might be pregnant, but nothing was visible on the ultrasound despite having 3 positive pregnancy tests (a week after my period started).

    Greetings

    Hi ladies,

On the day my period started, I tested 3 times and they were all positive. The next day, and then again when I went to the doctor, it was positive again.
On the same day I went to the doctor, I started bleeding, and it got worse and worse.
Worried, I called my midwife and went by for an ultrasound. Nothing to see, the Clear Blue test was 1-2, and now I'm on my period?
It was clearly visible on the ultrasound that there was a lot of blood present... I'm having an early miscarriage.
But it's so strange that the tests were positive and then I got my period. Has anyone experienced this? I really don't understand it at all
