Hormones, stress, or depression

Hi!
I'm currently 24 weeks and 6 days pregnant and really struggling with myself.
Since week 12 I've been dealing with pelvic instability, and the further along I got, the worse it became. Despite taking it easy and getting extra help at work. Because of that, I'd been thinking for weeks about what to do with myself, whether to go on sick leave or not.. But I can't do everything alone, my body just can't handle it anymore.
At 22 weeks I finally went on sick leave due to severe pelvic and ligament pain (stabbing in my ribs) and ended up crying for 2 days straight,, because I just couldn't do anything anymore.
Around that time I also had a lot of poor sleep, felt very low, and had lots of crying spells for no reason.
Then in week 23 my dad was diagnosed with cancer.
Cried for another 3 days straight.. Except when someone was around..
As long as I have distractions, it's okay.
But as soon as I'm alone I cry for no reason, feel very low,, have no motivation for anything but still force myself to go out to see friends or something.. And I have a lot of nightmares about murder, corpses, and creepy things that couldn't possibly be real.

Now I've read that pregnant women are more vulnerable to depression..
Not really sure what to do with myself

I think it's mostly stress—stress from your job, stress because your body can't cope anymore, and stress because your dad is sick. But... I'd definitely recommend seeking help/support since you don't want the stress to turn into depression. Also, stress isn't good for your baby. Talk to your GP or look for a psychologist. You might feel much better after just a few sessions! Good luck

    Thanks for your quick reply.
Monday I have to go to the midwife anyway... I get a different one each time because there are several in the practice... So that you know everyone if you have to give birth.
Only with some I feel rushed or misunderstood.
It really feels awful when your body doesn't function as you're used to,, you have a lot of pain from your pelvis and ligaments, can't work and get bad news.
I feel like I currently have little interest in the baby.. (I don't care anymore what happens)
I do want children though, not because of that, but priorities and interests are elsewhere at the moment..

Well, here I come with a very different response......I work in a psychology practice and I see very healthy reactions to such intense life events. I can imagine letting your heart out, but I don't read any need for treatment or guidance. Maybe a good friend is enough. I'm now 20 weeks pregnant and my father just came out of the hospital. I'm also in the same anxious period. My father's diagnosis is now open TB in the liver, lungs, and lymph, and the prognosis is unclear since he also has Crohn's disease.......terrible, so sudden crying spells especially at night and anxious moments where I anticipate losing him. And this on top of the hormones and changes I'm already going through. During my previous pregnancy, I went on sick leave at week 20 due to pelvic instability. Now it's not at all surprising, but all in all, I can imagine how you must be feeling. I hope you can find good support in your immediate surroundings; they can give you the best support there is! Love and strength!

I work in mental health care, and indeed, these seem like healthy reactions to difficult life events. But I would definitely discuss this with your midwife. You could explore what you could do to make this time a bit more pleasant. A wellness day, having lunch with friends, catching a movie—basically: relax. Of course, you can't just let go of the bad news about your dad right away. But it's important to take good care of yourself! Especially now that you're no longer only taking care of yourself ;-) And don't worry, you don't just get depression out of nowhere. Hormones play a big role in pregnancy, so you're often more emotionally unstable anyway.. But my advice is to discuss this with your midwife! Lots of strength!! And I hope you still enjoy that little miracle in your belly sometimes
