Forum Pregnant and working

At the end of the half-year contract, 3 months pregnant, when to tell?

I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant. I have a six-month contract with my employer, which ends when I'm about 12 weeks pregnant. Normally, I could get another six-month contract, but now I'm wondering if it's smart to tell them I'm pregnant before the contract extension. I do heavy physical work, and there's a good chance I'll need adjusted work soon. Because of that, I'd rather have the conversation with my employer earlier. Still, I'm hesitating because there's also a chance my contract just won't be renewed. I know they're not allowed to do that because of the pregnancy, but I fear they'll find or mention another reason.

What do you think is the best thing to do, or what would you do?

Greetings, Winnie

Oh, tricky one, Winnie! I think you should try to keep working as long as possible. Hopefully, you'll make it through to the 12 weeks. But of course, you need to think about your health and the baby's health too. If you do have to have the talk earlier, I'd suggest being honest about being worried that your contract won't be renewed and hoping that they'll extend it anyway because you really want to stay. That way, at least you've done your best and can only hope your boss is kind to you. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

    Hi Molly,
I think it's definitely the best idea to keep working until 12 weeks, at least it's worth trying. Otherwise, I'm afraid there's no other option than what you said: be honest and hope they still want to extend the contract.
    Anyway, I'm going for it!
    Greetings, Winnie
