corona

I'm wondering how pregnant women should handle the whole corona situation. They say it's a flu-like viral infection, but due to circumstances (e.g., no vaccine) it has a higher mortality rate. Yet back then, pregnant women were strongly advised to get the flu vaccine. Now you hardly hear whether pregnant women are considered a risk group for corona. Our immunity is currently suppressed, making us more susceptible. "There's too little information on what the virus does to pregnant women." That's the only info I've ever heard on TV. I don't shake hands with anyone, wash my hands, try not to touch my face, avoid going shopping for hours, but I do visit friends. Do you all handle it differently in other ways?

Greetings

Gosh, indeed difficult. I actually already asked this question in the relevant forum. I'm (unfortunately) not pregnant yet, but I'm also wondering "Is it wise to get pregnant?" in these "uncertain" times. So I can't give you an answer about what it does to your unborn baby, but I definitely think it's better to take precautions. Your baby can handle a little bit, don't forget that, so don't stress too much either, that's even worse for your unborn baby. The precautions you're taking now are more than enough. Try to build up your immunity as well, that's the most important thing: plenty of fruit, vegetables, etc.

If you have questions, feel free to call your midwife or gynecologist anytime. Just do it. Ask them about their policy regarding the coronavirus, what it means for pregnant women, etc. If you're unsure about something, you can definitely share that with them; you're certainly not the only one.

I'm also scared with my 4-month-old son. All the schools here in Belgium are closed now.

I teach myself, a colleague got infected. According to the GP, pregnant women really aren't part of the risk group

Pregnant women are indeed part of the risk group, but so far, there are very few pregnant women who are infected. See link:

Yeah, exactly, they don’t have much information. WHO and ECDC mainly say they don’t know. Only RIVM has decided to say it’s harmless. So in the Netherlands, all healthcare providers will say it’s harmless.
With Zika, they only found out a year after the outbreak.

I don't think it'll harm the baby. A cold can't do any harm, right?
I think you might get sicker as a pregnant woman, but I don't think it poses risks to the baby or is contagious. But I'm not a doctor, you know.
  7. Mimi #8

Yeah, I think so too, Bibi. But CMV is also a virus, and Zika is too. So not all viruses are safe...
Transmission is only clear for women in the third trimester whose baby is delivered within 1-7 days. It seems to go well for them, but for the rest, it's not 100% certain...

We don't know for sure, I think that's the only logical conclusion. Trying to prevent infection by practicing good hygiene and avoiding large gatherings is, I think, the only thing you can do. I am glad to be further along in my pregnancy now, so that all organs are at least already formed. As Mimi also says: some viruses are indeed harmful to an unborn baby, but there is too little experience with pregnant women with this virus to say anything definitive about it right now. Personally, if I weren't pregnant, I would try to stop trying until this crisis is over, because you're not sure about the consequences for an unborn baby. And now that I am pregnant: be careful, hope it passes us by, and cross our fingers that it turns out to do no harm.

I'm not 100% at ease either. I'm really careful with certain things. Like washing my hands often, avoiding crowds unless it's really necessary,...
  10. Mimi #11

That's so beautifully said, Puck! That's exactly how I feel.

    Hi hi,
Generally I stay calm about it, but my boyfriend keeps telling me to do this and that. Don't walk near people, but go around them.
Sometimes it tickles my funny bone and he gets mad that I don't take it seriously. Well, I do my best to wash my hands as often as possible and stay away from people who sneeze and cough for our little one.
Strange though, yesterday a man sneezed right in front of my face. Awkwardddd!!
    Keep your elbow up!!

    Greetings

I really don't find this something to joke about, when you read how many deaths and infections there are all over the world. It's so scary! What our government has decided to close 'almost everything'. This is really not normal! I would say, be careful everyone! How can they know now if it can harm a pregnant woman? It's a new virus and has only been going for 'just' 3 months. They haven't been able to do much research yet. Stay inside if you can and only go out if it's necessary. Yesterday I also asked my question regarding my cyst now for a week if it can continue... visits to the hospital are forbidden and all non-urgent appointments are postponed. But I still think it has to happen, because what am I going to do with all those eggs if they are there at least hihi
  13. Stef #14

Ok, breaking news from 26 minutes ago. Pregnant women and babies under 6 months are not in the risk group. But still be careful
  14. Puck #15

Well, I don't think they can say that right now. It'll only be clear after some time what the consequences are for early pregnancies. Right now, they can only say something about women who got corona at the end of their pregnancy. Only after half a year will children be born whose mothers got sick very early in their pregnancy. And that's the most important phase regarding the development of organs. Anyway, like Stef, I think it's not something to joke about. Hopefully, it can be addressed later.

@orchidea: I read your comment in another thread. Everyone has to know what they're doing themselves, and I'm indeed not making the choice. Maybe easy talk from my side? But I wouldn't sleep a wink for 8 months if I got corona early in my pregnancy. It already seems terrifying to me. But if you can let that lie and have confidence in it, you should definitely follow your heart.
  15. Orchidea #16

Puck, it was definitely not a personal attack towards you, not at all. I’m also posting on another site, so it wasn’t personal in this case. Of course, I accept your point of view. It just wasn’t meant personally.

I also think people will have different opinions about it. There’s no right or wrong here; in all situations, we just need to take care of ourselves, stay home when we have cold symptoms, wash our hands, etc. Everything will be fine in the end.
  16. Puck #17

I didn't feel attacked at all, no worries!
  17. Sofie #18

I still find it all a bit nerve-wracking. I think they have no idea what it does to little babies. It makes me worry about my 7-week-old. The advice is to 'cough and sneeze into your elbow', but his head is resting there during every feeding.. I just hope that breastfeeding protects him, in case I catch the virus.
  18. Anonymous Guest #19

Maybe not very tactful to say that you're glad your baby's organs are already developed and that you wouldn't close your eyes for 8 months if you were pregnant now... There are women who are currently in that situation, so those comments are really inappropriate.
As if women who are newly pregnant aren't already anxious enough about their pregnancy and Corona... You'd better keep that opinion to yourself in these times. Sorry.
Scientists definitely won't say that it's not dangerous for pregnant women if they have no reason to.
  19. Joy #20

Sorry, but Puck has a point. Scientists don't say things for no reason. But every day they learn more about corona. There used to be a lot of viruses that people thought were safe, while that wasn't the case at all. I'd assume that catching corona now isn't the best option, so to speak. Prepare yourself, avoid contact. Did you get infected anyway? Stay calm. With most harmful viruses, only a small percentage of people suffer serious consequences (for CMV, it's 1%). So you'd have to be really unlucky to 1) get infected and 2) fall into that small percentage.
And yes, anonymous people are definitely scared right now. But it's foolish to bury your head in the sand and assume scientists already know so much about corona. It's a new virus. In the short term, we know some effects. In the long term, nothing is known yet. For now, they're assuming a flu scenario. But that doesn't mean the virus will behave that way in the long term. Just look at the fact that they thought corona would die out with warmer temperatures... They've already backed off from that idea too.
