Toddler suddenly biting/squeezing hard etc.

My 29-month-old son has suddenly started biting, pinching, and pulling hair a lot. I just thought he wanted to ride a horse, and then he bites my back really hard out of nowhere.
Do others recognize this as a phase or something?
