Early test

Lisa
Hi everyone, I shared this story in another forum: I had a one-night stand and wasn't sure if the condom was reliable. I have a strong feeling something went wrong. A few days later, I ovulated. I took a test, admittedly way too early since my period was due on June 17th. But a very faint line appeared within the 5-minute reading time. Now I'm really doubting it because it's so faint. I do have some symptoms, but with my previous pregnancy (which ended in a miscarriage), I didn't get symptoms until week 6 and noticed nothing except a positive test 3 days before my period was due. I'll add a photo. It's very hard to see. The photo was taken within the reading time.

I don't see any line on that photo, not even at the highest contrast. Maybe you should upload a photo with your own contrast set to the highest? Then I might see it.

    I see him quite lightly.

I'm adding a contrast photo to my profile. I don't know yet how to put it directly in this forum.

He's on my profile. So I'm wondering what I'm actually seeing. This test is supposed to react from 10 hCG onwards. Why would it be so faint then? I'd think it wouldn't show color at 5 or 6 hCG, right? By the way, it wasn't morning urine. I'll obviously repeat the test, but I'm so nervous I want to know as soon as possible. Getting unexpectedly pregnant from a one-night stand wasn't exactly the plan.

I see a faint line... But I hope for you that it's not that. Hopefully, you still have the number of your one-night stand... if it's really effective, he should know about this too.

I just took another test, and it gave the same result... although today would officially be implantation day, if there was any fertilization at all. I'm still in contact with him. He's still sure the condom worked fine. I've never seen lines when I wasn't pregnant; I know the usual evaporation lines, which only showed up once when the test was completely dry. I'll wait a little longer. Monday is the day I'm supposed to get my period, and my cycle is pretty regular.

Now I can see a bit more, but I'm still not 100% sure if I see a line. I'd test with first-morning urine in 2 days. Next time, if you have another one-night stand and you're unsure and don't want to get pregnant, maybe take a morning-after pill.. good luck with that.

I don't get why you didn't take the MAP and what your miscarriage has to do with it? It's a pill that delays ovulation (and it doesn't work if you've already ovulated, so you can still get pregnant), it's not an abortion pill... So next time don't hesitate and take the MAP right away, then you wouldn't be in this situation now.
I also see something very vague. Indeed, wait a bit and test again the day after tomorrow...

I get that. I only realized later that my ovulation happened later that week. I didn’t assume sperm could survive for 5 days. Of course, I could have taken the pill, but I only thought about that later. And how would I have even gotten it? It was Ascension Day, so my GP was closed on Thursday and Friday, so I’d have to call the on-call doctor service? And they’d probably say the chance is very slim and that I should just call my own GP on Monday. The on-call service here in Groningen doesn’t really get too worked up.

Do you need a prescription for the MAP in NL? That's weird. In Belgium, it's easily available and there are always pharmacies with on-call service, even at night and on weekends/holidays.
  11. Anne #12

You can also buy the MAP at Etos/Kruidvat, etc. It was indeed an option, but they don't have it anymore. I have to say that the pill is really a hormone mess, and you don't even know if it would have had any effect. I took it once before, and it was really a terrible day for me. The line looks very faint; I'm curious to see if it gets darker.

Oh yeah, that's also possible nowadays. I had the morning-after pill once before, but that was still through the GP. The pharmacies were closed, and as I said, I only realized after a few days, when I put all the facts together, that there was a chance I might get pregnant.
  13. Puck #14

How does the GP know all that now? I understand you didn't even call? You can't just blame the GP on-call service for your own laziness. They wouldn't have picked you up with sirens, but you could certainly have gone in for something that couldn't wait days..... And I think you were pretty aware that there was a risk of getting pregnant, given the timing of your last post.

I'm not really sure whether I should hope you're not pregnant or that you'd prefer to be. I get the impression it's the latter. I'd find it quite bitter if you were pregnant. Everything sorted out here, a miscarriage, and you have no stable base, and then pregnant through clumsiness and laziness....

But regarding your test: I do think I see a faint line, and 5 days before your expected period, you shouldn't expect a very clear line anyway. All you can do is see if it gets darker, so test again in a few days. The symptoms are probably mostly due to your focus on the whole situation and the possibility that you're pregnant.

I think you're right, Puck.. I also got an STI.. That's painful... Someone else doesn't think carefully and only thinks about the possible consequences a week later. Sorry, girl, but you and that one-night stand are to blame here. And no one else. Hopefully, you're not pregnant and you've learned your lesson.

It's so nice that people think they know me so well! How dare you say I'm careless? You don't know me at all. I'm trying to explain a whole situation in a few sentences, and you're talking about who does or doesn't deserve to be pregnant? What does it matter if you have things sorted out? I've had a miscarriage too. And YES, I was on the pill, and NO, I never forgot to take it. Things like that sometimes happen. It's not about who has it best to raise a child. I have a stable job, a roof over my head, and loving parents and friends, so if a baby comes, they won't lack anything. And eventually, the person the baby is from will also step up, since he's already a father and knows what it entails. My only question in this topic was whether I'm seeing things correctly or imagining it. Thank you.
  16. Joy Guest #17

The fact that you got pregnant this way... Well, it proves your carelessness. Now, getting pregnant even though you did take some precautions can happen, and that's indeed not your fault. Whether you have everything figured out or not... I don't know, but good for you. It does make things a bit easier. But he's also the father... Hopefully, he's already divorced. And hopefully, you give yourself the chance to form a family. If it's possible.
  17. Anneke #18

I completely understand Puck and Joy.
You shouldn't take it personally, Lisa.
It's just not nice for those who are trying and it doesn't work out right away.
  18. Anne #19

Even though I really do understand your feelings, Joy and Puck, and I recognize it in myself for this pregnancy, I think it's good to leave room on Brabbels for questions like this. It's about a faint line, which from the way it's written seems to be desired if that's the case. For many people, getting pregnant and/or staying pregnant isn't easy, but luckily that's not true for everyone. That might not be pleasant to read, but it doesn't mean that this woman's feelings shouldn't be valid, and it seems like that's kind of the case now.
  19. Puck #20

I think you're really taking your comparison to the extreme here. I don't see what rape has to do with this. And if a teenager gets pregnant because she was careless, I have to say something about that too.

It just feels unfairly distributed. There are people who have been trying for years (luckily, I'm not one of them, but you read enough misery here) and then someone gets pregnant from carelessness and a sperm cell slipping past a condom. That's pretty bitter...? But I'm getting the feeling more and more that you actually want to be pregnant and that maybe it's not entirely an accident or carelessness, but a conscious choice hoping that this led to a pregnancy. Well, in that case, I hope it worked out for you. You're also writing more positively about the situation now. In your other topic, you mentioned an angry father and an imperfect situation. It sounded less positive then, right?

And I'm certainly trying to leave room for questions like this. That's why I said something about the test and the symptoms. But you can't shift the blame onto others (the man fumbles with the condom, the GP does nothing) while acting completely innocent yourself.

Lisa, good luck. I hope things work out well for you.
