Early ultrasound

Hey,

I'm currently 6+1 weeks pregnant. I had an early scan to check on our past. Our little boy passed away from CHD (a hole in the diaphragm), and I myself had pre-eclampsia and heart failure. Because I wasn't sure about the exact number of weeks, I had my first scan at 4+3, the second at 4+6, the third at 5+2, and the fourth at 5+6. My gynecologist in Geel says I'm 100% going to have a miscarriage. She's been saying this since the first scan. At UZ Leuven, the professor says there's nothing concerning to see right now. On the first scan, there was a small gestational sac with fluid around it; the second scan showed the same thing, and the sac wasn't implanted. The third time, the sac had grown and there was a yolk sac visible, and the fluid was gone. On the fourth scan, the sac hadn't grown well but had grown a bit, and the yolk sac had also grown. However, no fetal pole was visible. In Geel, they're saying to start pills tomorrow to induce a miscarriage. In Leuven, they're saying to do nothing and come back next Wednesday because nothing is wrong and a fetal pole and heartbeat should only be visible from next week onwards. I'll of course wait and hope everything turns out okay and that I really did have a very early scan. Has anyone here experienced this? From when on was the fetal pole visible for you?

That's so incredibly stressful! I won't take any pills yet and will wait another 1-2 weeks. If the heartbeat doesn't show up then, are you sure it's not okay?
There's also a good chance that if the heartbeat doesn't start, your body will kick everything into gear on its own.

    I'm rooting for you!

Stupid question maybe, but why are you seeing two different doctors for your pregnancy? And why didn't they communicate with each other? Now you have two different results and treatment plans; I'd go crazy over that. With a second opinion, doctors normally have contact about their views and treatment plans, and ultimately, a plan is chosen in consultation with the patient. As it's written now, it seems like the doctors don't know about each other.

    Hey Niki,

This was my ultrasound at 5 weeks and 4 days. Still no heartbeat visible yet. It was still a few days too early for that.

When did you get your first positive test? Because doing an ultrasound at 4 weeks is really quite early and unfortunately doesn't tell you much yet. It's still so tiny!

I’d wait a bit in your situation. Even if it’s not right, you need to convince yourself first. I don’t think it would hurt to keep it for a little longer, right?
But I’m also curious how things are going with those two doctors now.

I’m normally being followed up at UZ Leuven by Professor Van Calsteren. But since she couldn’t immediately free up a spot, the case manager at UZ Leuven advised me to get a first ultrasound here. I initially thought it was too early because I tend to get anxious quickly and didn’t want to worry myself unnecessarily, but given my longer cycle, we weren’t sure exactly how far along I was. So the case manager recommended I go ahead and get a first ultrasound and have my hCG levels checked. I also don’t understand why the doctors aren’t communicating with each other. Meanwhile, I’m only going to UZ Leuven, but it doesn’t look so good. We’ll know for sure on Wednesday. If the heartbeat isn’t there, there’s no hope left. ????

I wouldn't dare give an answer for that, then you're 6+3. My heartbeat was there, but the embryo was really tiny. If the pregnancy still seems too small for the duration, I'd say yes. But if it's big enough but no heartbeat yet, or just a few days difference, I'd wait. At 6+4, there was first only a gestational sac visible, and after a little search, a tiny pea with a heartbeat, but really tiny.
