Scared, happy, how do I get through the next 3 weeks?

Hi everyone. I feel so blessed to share that after just one try and our first attempt, I got to hold a positive test in my hands. Tomorrow I’ll be exactly 5 weeks along, and I feel better than ever. I’m full of energy, and strangely enough, I don’t have any cravings because my appetite has actually decreased?

In my immediate circle, there are women who’ve experienced miscarriages—my sister had two, and my sister-in-law had one after 7 weeks. Because of this, my partner and I are quite scared right now, even though this should be such a beautiful time. We barely dare to enjoy it, although I’m forcing myself to, because we’re so afraid that in three weeks we won’t hear a heartbeat or that something isn’t right. It feels like, you know, "too good to be true." The weird thing is, I’m euphoric one moment and then driven crazy by uncertainty the next. I’d love so much to peek inside; all I hope is that a baby is growing. My surroundings are already talking about the gender, while I only think, gender? I see it as a baby who has chosen me, and whatever gender it is, I hope it becomes my child... I still have to wait 3 weeks for the first ultrasound. Are any of you going through this and can share tips on how to find more peace of mind? Are there other ways to know things are okay? I don’t have any symptoms at all, just some pimples, a decreased appetite, and tender breasts. I don’t consider slight cramps as a symptom; I think that’s normal. Help an insecure ‘mama’ xx

Welcome to the hormone world! Your life is turned upside down after a test. Give it the space and accept it. I’m also hoping for a girl but don’t see it that way, it’s our littlest baby now. My experience is that you really need those 8 months to grow into it. And luckily, you don’t have to be sick all the time in the first few weeks, it’s different for everyone. Are you coming to the June group? We’re not that far apart, I’m 5.5 weeks pregnant.

Lucky! Sounds good and already a bit more reassuring! I'd love to join the June group. I'm actually curious why you're hoping for a girl though.. I'm hoping for a baby, haha. I've never really had a preference. Yeah, as a kid I only wanted boy dolls haha. But if you ask me now what I hope it is.. it's so weird but I have no gut feeling and no preference. I love both so much, a baby of your own... that's just the most beautiful thing you can experience as a human, right? The hormones are going wild all over the place for me because I can't think of anything else. Haha!

Oh yeah, after 3 boys I'd really like to use that girl's name haha

Hi Nij, so relatable... I felt the same way at 5 weeks. I really wanted to peek inside just to be sure something was really growing. Luckily, at 8 weeks I had my intake scan and a beautiful beating heart... I wish I could say it got easier, but I ended up living in the same way again, waiting for the 12-week scan. And then there was another beautiful active baby on screen. Now I'm almost 16 weeks and I realize I'm not stressing as much anymore. It'll probably get more exciting again around the 20-week scan, but you just have to trust a bit. The fact that it didn't go well for others says nothing about you.

That shift between happy and scared is so relatable. The hormones play tricks on you. I'm also someone blessed with few symptoms, no nausea, just tired, but okay (believe me, that's still coming). It can all still come, but it can also stay away. At 5 weeks it's still not far enough that hormones peak. That happens around 8 or 9 weeks I think... So it really says nothing!

    Congratulations, girl.

You need to try to enjoy it. I myself couldn't really enjoy it. I always woke up startled with the thought that I had miscarried, but in my case, it had a different reason. In my case, an important person wished me a miscarriage, which made me afraid until the birth. In my case, it was more when I slept that I was afraid. Not during the day. My blood pressure shot up and I had a lot of trouble with hard contractions, which made me have to take contractions suppressants. During the day, when I didn't feel my little one, there was a lot going through my head. But I gave birth to a lovely boy. Try to let go. Don't think that because you know people who have had a miscarriage, it will happen to you too. It can happen to anyone, but you need to try to enjoy it. When your little one is here, you'll miss being pregnant, haha.
