Signing a permanent job contract during pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I've had a really fun job for 2.5 years now, and we've been trying to conceive a second child for quite a while. I'll find out in the next 6 weeks whether I'm getting a permanent contract at work. I've heard that it's likely to happen, and as you might guess, we're pregnant! It's very early stages, and we're over the moon. But what should I do if I'm offered the permanent contract? I'm not ready to tell them yet because it's too soon. But this is the job of my dreams, and I really want to keep working after the birth, same hours and days. What would you have done?

Thanks in advance for your tips and ideas.

You're not obligated to say anything, and telling them could ruin your chances of getting a permanent position. So, say nothing. There are plenty of employees with permanent contracts who just go on maternity leave etc. Especially if you want to keep working the same days etc., your employer won't make such a big deal about you not telling them.

So, I'd say nothing until you've signed a permanent contract.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy, girl.
From 12 weeks onward, you're only required to inform your employer. So I'd advise you not to tell them if you'd like to keep working there. It could cost you your job.
Wishing you all the best and enjoy your pregnancy.

That's not how it works; you're only required to inform them 3 weeks before you start your leave.

Of course, it's nice to do it earlier. In your case... go ahead and sign your contract and wait until you're ready to tell them. You don't need to let your employer know just yet, and they'll get reimbursed for the pregnancy anyway. Plus, I assume you want to make sure everything is going well with the pregnancy first.

Ah seriously, I heard about it at 12 weeks already. That's really nice.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. I indeed don't want to tell anyone yet because it could go wrong again. But it also feels a bit bad, so I draw and then I come up with the news that I'm pregnant right after I've been hired, while I knew I was pregnant when drawing. I've decided to say nothing. Also because I don't want to change or demand anything regarding days and hours after my maternity leave. The risk is a bit too big for me, maybe not entirely fair, but it's just like that. Have a nice weekend everyone!

Inga, don't feel guilty about this now. You've been working for the company for two and a half years, and you're a young woman who can get pregnant. That's just part of life. If she likes the job as much as you say, they'll be super happy when you tell them at the right time. I only told my work about it when my belly couldn't be hidden anymore! But don't feel like you're doing something mean or inappropriate; they should have given you a permanent contract after half a year!
