Baby 6 months old. What should they be able to do?

Hi everyone,

I need to get something off my chest. I have a 6-month-old daughter. After birth, she struggled hard with her weight for 2 months: not eating, losing weight... So everyone kept coddling her because 'poor little thing', so small, so sweet... (you know the type). Last week I had a check-up with the pediatrician, and they told me she's totally on track motor-wise and does everything she should. Verbally, she's already a few months ahead. But physically... it's not quite where it should be. And it's not that she 'can't', but rather that she's a bit lazy. All that coddling, of course!!

She shows no signs at all of straightening herself up, gets really tired if she has to sit with a straight back for too long, and can't lie on her tummy for long (she was a baby with severe reflux, so we couldn't really practice tummy time either). When you let her stand on her legs, she bends them after just 1 second. She always plays very calmly (not very enthusiastic or active in grabbing things, but rather exploring everything calmly).

We now have to practice with her daily for a month to strengthen her chest muscles, otherwise, we'd have to take her to physiotherapy. Now I can't get these thoughts out of my head: Will she be able to sit on her own? Will she crawl? What if she can't walk?

Is it really so abnormal for a 6-month-old baby not to be firm yet? To let herself hang a bit? Because I'm feeling this now and I'm so worried she won't catch up

In my opinion, you don’t need to care about any of that at all!

Let them set their own pace and keep practicing sitting upright in the high chair in a normal/fun way (short sessions, max 5 minutes!) and on their tummy. Let them babble; you can’t spoil or overprotect a baby that young!

Every child does things in their own way. Every child has their own pace. I'd love to just enjoy my little one. You shouldn't worry too much. Just try playing nicely with the little one etc. until she indicates she's had enough. It gets a bit longer each day as she gets used to it. Just pay attention. My little one is also 6 months old but I've practiced a lot with him. But don't force it.

Thanks, ladies! I really shouldn't take it too hard. Every child has their own pace. A little practice can't hurt, but it shouldn't turn into a heavy workout for her every day

Not exactly, you have to do what she can handle. And over time, she'll let you know that she can go a bit longer. That's how I do it with my little one. It's like a grown-up building up their stamina, a bit longer each day.

Worried mom, how is your daughter doing now? My little boy is the same. Almost 7 months old and prefers to watch from a distance. Doesn't eagerly grab toys. Still not rolling. On his tummy, it's getting better and better. He prefers kicking????. My mom said I did the same thing. And everything turned out fine for me too. So it'll work itself out.
