Good afternoon,
I found out I'm pregnant the day before yesterday. It's still very early since I tested before my period, but the symptoms were so strong that I couldn't help myself... 7 tests later... all 7 positive.
Let me start by saying that my husband and I were already planning to have a baby, but we wanted to wait until the house was finished. Well, guess we should've been more careful.
Anyway, I spoke to my GP, and of course, they advised me to stop smoking. Even though I know I'm now responsible for this little mustard seed, damn! That's tough.
That had to come out.

I understand you... you can say it's really hard but doable. The hardest part was the first 3 days. But I really can't wait to give birth so I can smoke a cigarette again with a nice cup of coffee.
Congratulations on your pregnancy... enjoy it.

So you did really well by not smoking for 9 whole months. And then you start again? I still don't get that. I'd be so proud of myself for quitting that I wouldn't start again, especially for my baby.

You don't have to understand it either ... enjoy your pregnancy and hang in there, I'd say...
If you're the one who started it...

Smokers are addicts... I know someone who quit for 2 years, but started again... unfortunately, it's a really bad and money-draining addiction. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to quit.

    And you're right

I smoked for 14 years myself. Before I even knew/thought I was pregnant, I quit smoking abruptly. Yes, it's a wonderful/horrible addiction, but I really can't stand people who smoke even one cigarette during their pregnancy, or while breastfeeding, or even around their kids (second- and third-hand smoke is proven harmful too). You have a miracle in your belly, a miracle that many healthy non-smoking people aren't granted. You shouldn't do this to your baby. Don't even think about it, throw those crappy cigarettes away!

I read that in Belgium there's now a law that you're not allowed to smoke in the car if children are present. If you do it and get caught, it costs you €1000. Hopefully, that law will come to the Netherlands too.

I wasn't the one who started this thread, Stef. Sorry if I came across a bit harsh. But I really think it's weird that you stop and then start again once the baby is here. Then it's just as bad, and all your hard work was for nothing.

But topic starter, I do understand that it's hard to quit. It's an addiction after all. Good luck with it, and I really hope you manage to do it. For everyone's health.

    Hey hey,
You don't come across as harsh It's just shameful, I admit... but these thoughts helped me not smoke for 9 months... and I really hope that when I hold my little one, the urge will completely disappear. Let's hope so... greetings

    Congratulations anonymous!

And well.. I smoked for 17 years, and stopped right when I got pregnant.. I found it such a terrible no-go. I was also so incredibly nauseous that I didn't feel like it at all. I gave birth 4 weeks ago.. and even though I kept thinking during the whole pregnancy: oooo soon I'll be able to enjoy a cigarette again.. I haven't done it yet. I want to be healthy for my baby and not have him smell it either. I hope I can keep it up.. haha. How great is that! Smoking was (is?) for me just a form of relaxation.
