Vanishing Twin

Hi everyone,

I finally got pregnant through fertility treatment (ICSI). At my 6w+4 ultrasound, the doctor thought it might be twins. Less than two weeks later, I suddenly started spotting brown. I got quite panicked and had another scan the next day. It turned out one baby had stopped growing (7mm, no heartbeat). The other one was doing fine, with a strong heartbeat. The doctor called it a 'vanishing twin'. It was such a weird feeling, life and death side by side.

Now the doctor has advised complete rest to avoid anything going wrong with the remaining baby. So I'm worried again about losing the second baby...

Has anyone here experienced this? I haven't found much info online.

Thanks!
Best wishes

Hi Mel, I don't have personal experience with it myself. But I'm proof that it can go well. My mom went through the same thing. After losing one baby at 7 weeks and resting a lot during the first few weeks (after the 12-week scan everything looked perfectly fine again), the second baby stayed healthy. And I was eventually born healthy a few months later. Take it easy and stay positive. I'm rooting for you that everything goes well. Greetings

    Hi Mel,
Same here. I got pregnant without medical help too, but at the 8-week ultrasound, a second baby was visible. The midwife even said it would be identical twins. However, it quickly became clear that this second baby had stopped growing.
I’m 26 weeks pregnant now and everything is going fantastically. Everything according to the book. I’m confident. Living healthily. You can’t do more than that.
    Good luck with your pregnancy.

Thanks, girls, for your replies :-), it feels good to read positive stories.
When I heard that one baby hadn't grown further, I suddenly felt less pregnant and also got a stronger sense that things can go wrong.
I'll take it easy then and hope everything turns out okay. I'm also being followed up more closely and already need to come back for an ultrasound soon; hopefully, that will be reassuring.
Wishing you all the best with your pregnancies! :-)

    Hi Mel,

I also got pregnant with medical help. This round, it worked out with just Clomid. Since I had a triple ovulation, it was quite nerve-wracking until the first ultrasound, wondering how many would make it. At 7 weeks, during the first scan, they saw 2 heartbeats and 2 gestational sacs. However, it was immediately clear that one sac was smaller, and they couldn't say what that meant; it would either catch up or result in a miscarriage. Ultimately, 2 weeks later at the next scan, it turned out that both had developed, but the smaller one's heartbeat had stopped at 8.5 weeks.

She immediately explained that the chance of my body rejecting it was small because I was still pregnant with the other baby. I'm now 32 weeks pregnant, but until the 20-week scan, the little one was still visible on the ultrasound. My body encapsulated it, and it will come out with the placenta during delivery, as I was told.
