yearly contract is ending

Ladies, I just need to get this off my chest. It’s always a risk to get pregnant when you’re on a one-year contract. Your employer can let it expire without reason and not renew it. Of course, they’ll never give the reason “pregnant” as the reason. So I got pregnant while on a one-year contract. I found out I was pregnant at the end of October 2012, and my contract ends in January 2013. Unfortunately, I’ve been told they won’t renew it due to budget cuts. I happen to know this is actually true. My role was already project-based, and I know that on my department, everyone on a temporary contract won’t get an extension. When I accepted the role, they already warned me that it might not be renewed because of the project itself—I wasn’t even pregnant then... In total, 4 people from my department on a one-year contract were told (including myself) that it won’t be renewed. Still, this hits pretty hard. Financially it’s not a big deal since almost my entire salary would go to childcare anyway. My husband and I discussed getting pregnant thoroughly and took the risks into account. So financially it’s not really a problem. But career-wise, I find it quite unfortunate since it’s very hard to find a part-time job and you now have a “gap in your CV.” Because in January I’ll officially no longer be working for the organization... and if I were on maternity leave you could still list the organization on your CV... now there’s nothing. But well, I was wondering if anyone has experience with this? My manager emphasized that my performance was absolutely perfect and that I should keep in touch with him, and if I want to get back to work I can call him, and maybe there will be new positions open for me. But 2013 is a very difficult year for the entire organization but especially for my department. Some projects they’ve just stopped... So I’m not going to pin my hopes on it myself. It’s just over. Had to swallow it...

Hi, how unfair is that, right? You don't have to mention anything about the gap in your CV, of course. I wouldn't do that anyway. So I'd just put 2011-present on my CV.

    Good luck!

Hi Liza, that won't work unfortunately. Because if I apply (say, next April) and say I've been working there until now (or still am), and they check that (which happens often), they'll see I left on February 1st. And if I then say in April, or at the time of applying, that I'm still "working" but on maternity leave, that won't work... unfortunately.

That’s really tough, I can imagine. Not getting your contract renewed.
In my job, I’d say a “gap” in my CV wouldn’t be such a big deal. I work in healthcare, and to call it a career at this point is a bit of a stretch...

So I can’t really put myself in your shoes regarding that gap in your CV. I just want to wish you strength and hope you’re enjoying your little one!!!

    Best, Dani

A gap on your CV isn't a big deal. You've got a good story to go with it. Lying on your CV or deliberately creating ambiguity is! Liza wouldn't mention it. If someone brings it up and you find out (e.g., during a reference check), the new job will slip right past you. So just mention it, including the months. Being clear and honest is what we (recruiters) like!

    Hey!
    That’s annoying, right..
I’ve got it too.. My contract ended on November 30th last year. My due date was November 24th.. luckily I’ll just get maternity leave and then unemployment benefits after that. But now I’m wondering.. what do you put in a job application then? Because I’m supposed to go back to work in mid-February..

    Hi everyone,

I'm only 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant right now, but that was the first thing I thought of. My contract ends next October. I'll be giving birth around August 23rd... Do the math. I have no idea if they'll let me stay... I hope so, but I'd better assume the worst-case scenario.

I'm also single, so I'm looking into everything I can do if they don't renew my contract, what I'm entitled to, etc., etc.

@Debje what do you mean by: What do I put in my cover letter?

And girls, you can put anything on your CV or in your letter, as long as it's the truth! Very important

It's pretty tricky when you're pregnant and your contract is ending... what I mean is, normally I put in my cover letter what kind of work I do and the reason why I'm applying... now I'm saying that my contract wasn't renewed because of my pregnancy?

    Hi everyone,

I'm 5 weeks pregnant now. We're super happy and feel like we're on a pink cloud somewhere ;-) But I also have a one-year contract, which ends on July 31, 2013. My due date is around September 8, so after my contract ends. My question is, do I have no rights at all? Or maybe some leave based on the fact that I was still working?

I hope you know more about this. I find it hard to approach my employer about this (already).

    Love,

On the UWV website, you can find all sorts of info about terminating your contract and the options for unemployment benefits. Even if your contract ends and you give birth after that date, you still have the right to a regular WW benefit and even to a special maternity leave benefit (WAZO).

Just do some research online; there are plenty of options.

As for your CV: just be honest. You can certainly justify your resignation well.

What really frustrates me is that society is still so unfairly divided. Women are still sometimes discriminated against. I mean, we can't help the fact that only we can bear children and that we're 'forced' to take a certain period off...

    Anyway, good luck!

Hi Tina, thanks for your reply. I'll quickly check the UWV website. I can totally relate to your frustrations, and I hope that in the future, women's special gift of caring for little ones = the future will be more appreciated.

    Wishing everyone lots of success!

Yes, same here. My contract ends in January and my leave goes until the end of February. So we'll have to wait and see what happens.

    It's all really tough.
    1. Society/the government wants us to work.
    2. Society wants us to reproduce because of the aging population.
    3. Kids then have to go to daycare, which is mega expensive.
    4. The added value of the woman having to work then disappears.
    5. And if you're pregnant, your boss isn't happy because you're away for a while.

    What does society want now...

I'm lucky to work in an organization with lots of women who don't make a big deal out of it. Pfff

I really don't know what to do... I already have two girls, one is 3 and the other is 2. I took a test today and it's positive, but now I really don't know what to do because I don't want to lose my job since I have a temporary contract that ends on August 31st. I've had two 6-month contracts plus an interim period. So I don't know what to do, keep it or not, pff, I'm scared.

    Hi everyone,
I'm looking for women for my blog about discrimination in the workplace who can share their experiences with issues they faced regarding work during pregnancy. Like not being able to return to the same role or getting more frequent performance reviews, etc.
If you'd be interested in this, or feel it's important to share your story to help other women, please let me know.
You can reach me at [email protected] . The article will be published on Wordpress with your first and last name.

    Best regards,
    Michiel van Ooijen
