Baby smaller than expected

Hi!
Went to the OB today for a first ultrasound. According to calculations, I should already be 8 weeks along (I have a very regular cycle). But when the OB looked at the baby, she said it’s only 6 weeks and 4 days old. Also, the heartbeat was very irregular. We’re supposed to come back for a follow-up in a little over a week. Does anyone have experience with this?

Yes, and unfortunately, this didn't work out!

I hope it's not for you, but it's often a bad sign if they fall behind by a week or more.

Wishing you lots of success, and I hope your baby makes up for lost time!

    Hi Lola,

I had my first ultrasound on February 9th because I was bleeding. They saw a gestational sac that was indeed smaller than expected for 7 weeks and 2 days. Unfortunately, it ended on February 11th.. afterwards it turned out I also had an ectopic pregnancy.
Despite this negative story, there are plenty of positive examples, but if you're very sure about your cycle, it's not a good sign I'm rooting for you that it will still turn out to be a healthy pregnancy!!

Strength & let me know what came out of the next ultrasound!

    Hi Lola!
Unfortunately, we also didn't have a positive outcome. The gestational age matched up for us, but the heartbeat was very irregular... The midwife didn't give us much hope during that first ultrasound, but she also didn't say it would definitely go wrong: the chance was 50/50. Unfortunately, a week later on the ultrasound, the little heart had stopped... It's really different for everyone, so I hope you're among the 50% where it ends well! Lots of strength! X

I should actually be 8 weeks pregnant by now. I’ve had both positive and negative tests and really can’t make sense of the logic behind it. When I was just past my due date, I went to the gynecologist who could see that I was barely pregnant. I then had two very stressful weeks and started bleeding. Bleeding like in a very heavy period. I tested again afterwards and it was negative. Two weeks after the bleeding started, which lasted about six days, I went back to the gynecologist to make sure I didn’t need a D&C. Big surprise: I’m still pregnant. They did a urine test then and it was very positive. I have another appointment next week. In the meantime, I’ve had both positive and negative tests. I do drink a lot, but still, it’s worrying.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hi everyone, unfortunately, it ended badly for us too. Hartje finally stopped beating. It was supposed to be our second child, but the loss really hurts. X

Thank you for your sympathy... indeed very sad, but since I already have one walking around, I don't know how I should feel. Grateful, sad, angry... I just let it wash over me. Is there anyone here who wants to share their experiences about how it went from there? I hope it comes out naturally, but since today I've been having feelings and bleeding like during my period. If it doesn't come out naturally, I'll have a curettage on Monday. And how long did it take before you were pregnant again? I'm a bit anxious about everything coming my way...

Totally get that you don't know how you're supposed to feel. It's no small thing either... I won't burden you with my story because we waited too long to let it happen naturally, which left me with a long recovery after the miscarriage. The midwife said it's normal that at that stage it's no more than a "heavy" period. I didn't end up having a D&C, so I can't tell you anything about that...

By pure chance, I tested positive again yesterday, 4 months after we found out last time, and this was our 2nd round of trying! So keep hoping!!!

Lots of strength, Lola! Hopefully, it'll all be okay...

Thanks for sharing your stories... they really help me get through it. And Linda; congratulations and enjoy your pregnancy!

My last pregnancy was very stressful. Everything was fine with the baby, but I had a miscarriage 10 years ago which drove me up the walls with stress. Everyone kept saying, "Don't worry so much, it's not good." I ended up having a good pregnancy and a healthy baby. Now I have a lovely girl of 1.5 years.

With this pregnancy, I felt very relaxed because I had full confidence since I've already had a baby. If it goes wrong... well, nature is weird like that...

10 years ago, I got pills to insert and had a curettage the next day. The pregnancy back then was unplanned. Now I absolutely didn't want those pills anymore. I was really traumatized by the pain. Now I'm just waiting, hoping it starts on its own. I've had some bleeding but it stopped again. But I don't dare go anywhere, I'm afraid it'll start suddenly while I'm in a shop or something.

It was nice to hear that you all got pregnant again so quickly. I think it's the best medicine: don't dwell on it but start planning for the future again.

Now I still have a big question I'll ask the gynecologist on Monday. I don't feel guilty or anything, but since it's the second time, is it something I did, or is this just bad luck?

Thanks for the replies and for sharing your stories! It does me good. X

Hi Lola, definitely don't think for a second that it's your fault. You can't cause a miscarriage, nor can you prevent it. In 9 out of 10 cases, something goes slightly wrong in the fusion of the sperm and egg, causing development to fail somewhere along the line.

We were also told that when we had a miscarriage that the chance of another miscarriage in a subsequent pregnancy is just as high. It's only after 3 or more consecutive miscarriages that there might be something else going on. For example, an abnormality in the womb/sperm or that you and your partner are just not genetically compatible.

My miscarriage didn't go as they told me it would. Actually, it happened in a flash. On December 22nd, I woke up with back pain.. Exactly the same feeling as when I normally got my period. I went straight to the toilet and lo and behold; I wiped blood. It wasn't much, but it was clearly red/pink. Combined with that back pain, it was clear to me; something was wrong. I woke up my boyfriend and said: I'm bleeding! He immediately tried to reassure me, telling me not to jump to the worst conclusion. Coincidentally, I had to go to the GP that morning due to an ear infection. I thought I could just ask how things were going. When I got there, I naturally burst into tears, inconsolable (Nice hormones!). I explained the story and the GP said that bleeding occurs very often during pregnancies and doesn't necessarily mean the worst. She advised me to call my midwife just to be sure and ask what she/he thought. So I called the midwife and explained my story. The bleeding had meanwhile worsened slightly and now looked like a normal period. She asked if I was also passing clots. This was (not yet) the case. I was allowed to come by late afternoon for an emergency ultrasound. When we finally had the ultrasound, to my great surprise, there was still a baby visible WITH a beating heart!! The midwife did mention that the heartbeat was on the slow side. She gave two reasons. 1. The baby is slightly younger than we thought and the heart has just started beating. 2. The baby is dying and the heart will stop. She couldn't see where the bleeding was coming from, by the way. Leaving the hospital with a glimmer of hope. Two hours later, it went wrong. When I went to the toilet, I felt something 'pop' out of me. That was it. It was over. I was no longer pregnant. I could only cry, cry, cry. I felt like such a failure and was so intensely sad. After that, I bled for another 5 days and on December 28th I was allowed to go back for a check-up. (This was actually my first appointment with the midwife, the intake). On the ultrasound, we saw that the womb had already closed completely and there was nothing more to see of a possible pregnancy. 25 days after my miscarriage, I got my period again. While I was told that the first period always takes a while because the body needs time to recover. About 6 to 8 weeks. And since I normally always had a cycle of 30 to 35 days, I also assumed it would take a little while to get going again. 30 days after my first period, I had a positive test in my hands again!!! Now I'm 5.6 weeks pregnant again!
So for me, everything went really, really fast. The miscarriage, the recovery, and getting pregnant again.

In two weeks, I have 'again' the first ultrasound scheduled. I find it really exciting and I'm scared every time that it will go wrong again, although I do assume that my body knows whether something is wrong or not. I think that someone who has experienced a miscarriage always lives with that fear in the first few weeks. Every time I think one moment it's fine and 2 minutes later I think it's not fine. I can't wait for that ultrasound and to hear that he/she is doing perfectly fine. Only then will I have peace of mind again.

Lola, that's so sad... lots of strength and give yourself time to process this!
