Physically demanding work

Hi everyone,
I'm about 6 weeks pregnant and have a physically demanding job.
I work at PostNL as a mail carrier.
This means heavy bags, lots of walking and cycling.
I don't mind the walking and cycling too much, and I make sure the bags are placed in the right spots at the depot.
Now, those bags weigh at least 10 to 15 kilos.
Especially since this is my first pregnancy, I want to be careful.
Should I inform my employer that I'm pregnant earlier than usual given the work I do?

Yes, I'll definitely let you know earlier if you're feeling unsure. I work in healthcare on a PG ward and chose to tell people early on. You don't even have to tell all your colleagues as long as your supervisor knows.

    Hey,
I’d also suggest mentioning this to your employer. Maybe they can check if there’s a temporary transfer option, because towards the end of your pregnancy it’ll definitely be harder to work with such heavy loads.
    Greetings,

Once you report your pregnancy, your employer is legally required to protect you from workplace risks. You might get adjusted or different tasks if needed. Usually, you can still lift things at 6 weeks, but it depends on how long that's safe.

It really depends on how your pregnancy goes. If you have no complaints, you can often keep working for a long time, but towards the end, you'll need to take it easier since you get tired faster and your belly gets in the way.

Heavy lifting isn't advisable because you're more at risk of falling, and your muscles and joints loosen up in preparation for childbirth.

But if you have issues like pelvic instability early on, you really need to be careful about what you do.

So it depends on how you feel. If you're unsure, I'd suggest reporting it and/or asking for a chat with the occupational health doctor, not to sign off sick, but for advice on your work tasks.
