A shaky start

Hi everyone! I’m new here on the forum. I’ve been reading along occasionally, but I’ve finally decided to sign up

I’m just pregnant with our second child. We don’t know exactly how far along I am yet.

After the positive test, we had a week to enjoy it, and then all the trouble started. First, there was some brown blood, then some red. Luckily, I could visit the midwife right away. They saw a gestational sac, but nothing else yet. A week and a half later, I had to come back. (The bleeding continued throughout that time, sometimes a bit more than other times.) At the next appointment, they did see a fetus with some early heart activity. I’m supposed to be 5.5 weeks pregnant. But that doesn’t really match up with the actual duration if I look at my last period, ovulation, positive test, etc. Still, going from nothing to a beating heart gives me hope! The heart rate matched the size of the fetus. However, she mentioned a ring in the gestational sac where the baby normally sits in the middle, but this one was way off to the side or even outside it? The midwife found it strange and couldn’t promise that everything would be okay, but the fact that there was some growth is positive.

Two days later, there was more bleeding with a lot of clots. Confidence dropped again, and we could come in right away for an ultrasound. The fetus was still there, and the heart was still beating. But there was an extra “spot” that had appeared in that inner ring she mentioned last time. She had never seen this situation before and didn’t know what it was. That was last Friday. I got a referral to the gynecologist, where I can go tomorrow (Monday). Since yesterday, I’ve had severe period-like abdominal pain. Not real cramps, just constant abdominal pain. Along with ongoing bleeding. The pain is less when I lie down than when I move around. All in all, it’s been a terribly stressful start for us. Our gut feeling has been telling us for 2 weeks that things couldn’t keep going well, and yet we’ve seen the heart beat twice.. We’ll have to wait and see tomorrow.

Sorry for the long story. I don’t necessarily need replies here; I also don’t know if anyone has experienced something like this.. But being able to share and get it off my chest gives me a good feeling

Niekie, sending you strength for tomorrow. I think your gut feeling is usually right in these kinds of situations. Still, somewhere deep down you’re hoping for a miracle. Hopefully, you’ll at least have some certainty tomorrow.
    Love, floydi

    Hey Niekie,
    First of all, big congratulations...
That second spot? Could it be a blood clot? Or a second baby...?
    I don't know...
I don't want to give you false hope, but stay positive.
    Big hug, Stef

    Thanks both for your replies!
Floydi, that uncertainty is indeed the worst. So I'm really hoping for some certainty tomorrow.
Had really bad stomach pain this afternoon and just lost another clot (not the baby yet), and after that, the pain was almost gone right away. So my body is definitely working things out. Luckily, it's almost tomorrow and hopefully we'll know where we stand.

I'm so sorry to hear that
Last night and all night it got worse and I eventually lost the baby.

I still went to the gynecologist afterwards and luckily everything was clear right away.
Taking it easy for now, processing it, and hopefully there will be a brother or sister for our daughter one day.
