Girl or boy at 16 weeks ultrasound?

Hi everyone!
Yesterday, at 16 weeks, I had a prenatal ultrasound done, and it’s a girl!! Although I completely expected it to be a boy, we’re obviously super happy about it!
But the baby wasn’t positioned well for the ultrasound to get a clear view, so it was quite a hassle. Now I’m wondering if the doctor might have made a mistake, especially since the three lines were completely invisible... and a penis wasn’t visible either. So I’m wondering; was the ultrasound maybe done a bit too early? Could the gender not be fully developed yet? I’ve also read that boys can sometimes be mistaken for girls at first glance!
I’m curious to hear your opinions and/or experiences!
Greetings, Jacky

It could be because the baby wasn't positioned well for the ultrasound, but I had a gender determination done at 14 weeks and 3 days, and it was clearly a boy, even though we thought we were having a girl! The 20-week ultrasound confirmed it was indeed a boy.

Makes sense if your gut says something else and the ultrasound is inconclusive. But normally, at 16 weeks they can tell for sure, unless they're using really old equipment. I had a gender scan at 15 weeks and 2 days, and we're having a girl.

You do hear that they sometimes get it wrong, right? Especially when they think it's a boy but it's actually a girl. So I get your concern, but you should still say that if they're not sure, they should let you know.
Don't you get a 20-week ultrasound? Then you can ask again before you've done all your shopping

I think it’s just as often misinterpreted the other way around, you know. But with so many weeks, it should really be clear by now. We already knew at 13 weeks and a bit. It’s not that with a boy, something only starts growing later. Actually, the nub first sticks out, and it develops into either a penis or a vagina. In the case of a girl, the nub retracts, so once it’s gone, the chances are actually higher that it’s a girl, not that it turns out to be a boy after all. Sorry, it’s a bit tricky to explain, but I think you’re having a girl.

Update from me: had my 20-week ultrasound yesterday. Still a girl!
