empty gestational sacs

Yesterday we had our first ultrasound. Two gestational sacs were visible (a twin pregnancy), but both were empty and no heartbeat was detected. The sonographer was very definite: this is a miscarriage.

However, around me I'm now hearing all kinds of stories where a heartbeat was found later on. Even a midwife friend of mine said that this conclusion is quite hasty. I'm only 6 weeks and 4 days pregnant, and the picture can change every day. But my own midwife was already talking about curettage and told me not to have any hope... She got her info from the definite sonographer, though, and didn't see it herself.

Who has experience with such a clear verdict of miscarriage, and then later a beating heart anyway?

I definitely want to wait a week and then have another ultrasound. My hope is minimal.

Hi! I think this is indeed a very early conclusion! And I definitely won't do anything sooner than when you're absolutely sure! I'll just call the hospital to let them know you're really worried and explain the situation. There's a good chance you'll be able to come in quickly for an ultrasound with an OB-GYN. Congrats!! In my case, a gestational sac was only visible now, even though I've known I'm pregnant for 2 weeks and tested really early! Did they take a blood test to check your hCG levels? Maybe you're just really early on because if they only see a gestational sac, it's hard to determine how far along you are, and they can really only figure out if it's progressing by checking hCG levels! Good luck!

    Thanks for your reply!

I did another test this afternoon and the test line came out darker than the control line... So my body is still producing more hormones instead of less... It makes it even harder to accept.

I've already called a different midwife and would really like to switch. She's near our new house, so I'd have to do it anyway sooner or later. But I can only see her on Tuesday... So I'll just have to wait in suspense!

It's still way too early to say it's a miscarriage. I'd really wait a bit longer; there's a good chance that in a few weeks you'll see two little hearts beating. Trust your gut. Good luck!

Oh, that's so sad, Linda. Strength!
I had a miscarriage in March at 8 weeks - an empty gestational sac. Everyone was pretty firm about that; if you're only 5 weeks along, it can still be unclear, but after that, there's usually not much more you can do.
My tests always rose nicely, and the miscarriage didn't start naturally because my body really thought I was still pregnant.

Are you sure you're already 6 weeks and 4 days, or could it be even less? By the way, it's totally fine to ask for another scan to get certainty! I didn't need a D&C, I could choose myself: wait and see, medication, or D&C. If it turns out to be a miscarriage after all, make sure you get well-informed about the options!

Oh no Linda , I've unfortunately experienced this myself. I should be 8 weeks and 5 days pregnant, but according to the ultrasound, it's 5 weeks and 4 days with an empty gestational sac. I knew this really couldn't be true given the positive test and missed period. At 6 weeks and 4 days, an embryo and heartbeat should normally be visible. So as Loes just said, are you sure you're that far along?

Hi, good that you went for the ultrasound! I'll really wait a bit longer, maybe you got pregnant much later than you think, and without the embryo it's very hard to tell exactly how far along you are, so wait until you're sure it really has to be 6 weeks. Miracles happen, we say! So I really hope there are two beating hearts on Tuesday! Or at least one! Don't lose hope until it's definitively ruled out! Let me know here, okay? Greetings and lots of luck and strength!

    Hi!
Thanks for your replies. Today we had another ultrasound, and there was a well-developed embryo with a strong beating heart! It’s so bizarre, that other sonographer was so certain last week that we didn’t dare to hope anymore. But now we have good news! I’m 7 weeks and 4 days pregnant, so last week I was 6 weeks and 3 days. She really shouldn’t have been so definitive so early on. The doctor today said she got goosebumps from anger over the unnecessary sadness we went through!

The second baby had fallen so far behind that it’s becoming a vanishing twin. Sad, but for us, the joy of the one that’s doing well is taking over. We’re going to have a baby after all, woohooo!
