Is the heartbeat ultrasound standard?

Is it standard to get a heartbeat scan? I had my last scan at 10.5 weeks, and everything was fine. Now I'm getting another heartbeat scan at 14 weeks, and of course, a screening scan at 20 weeks. I'm curious why a heartbeat scan is even done? Is this just a check because there's a big gap between the 10.5-week scan and the 20-week one?

Do they mean by heart echo just listening to the little heartbeat with such a small device? That's what I think. And yes, that's usually done at every check-up after 12 weeks. You're always welcome to listen to the beautiful little heartbeat for a little while.
The real ultrasounds with images and such are generally much less frequent.

@knuffel Yeah, that must be it. Just through one of those little devices, indeed. Exciting! Thanks for your reply!
