Baby's arms are pointing backwards

Our 6-month-old daughter has always stretched her arms backward. When you pick her up, she does it, but especially during tummy time. She lies like a 'little bird's nest' with a hollow back and her arms tense and stretched backward. Because of this, she can't hold it for long and therefore can't play with a toy in front of her. I try every time to bring her arms forward so she can lean on them, but she doesn't seem to find it comfortable and immediately pushes them back again. I'm worried that as long as she doesn't take support on her hands and arms, she won't start crawling or push herself up to sitting.

Who recognizes this? And what did you do about it? Tips or exercises? Or did it just pass on its own?

Yes, my little boy does that too! He’s also 6 months old now. He seems to be super happy on his tummy. I’m going to the pediatrician next week and will ask them about it.

To encourage babies to play in tummy time, you can do the following. Take a nursing pillow and place your baby on it. They should really rest their chest on it, so their arms lie over it. This way, they don't have to support themselves on their arms and can practice grasping with their hands. It's also less tiring and more comfortable. Start with one minute, then move to five minutes. If they enjoy it, you can remove the pillow. We do this in our daycare, and it works for 9 out of 10 kids. She probably doesn't like it on her tummy because she assumes that position.

    Good luck!
